What would be worse, or preferrable - 3 years in the slammer or 6 cane lashes?

    Caning is way excessive.

Light spanking, on the other hand, would be fun after a few beers.

Maybe I don't really get it, but what kind of work exactly does a Muslim "part time model" do in a fundamentalist Islamic culture?

Morphine is good. Heroin is bad. Water is good. Drowning is bad.

The people responsible for the ruling are crazy and insane. There is nothing else to say about it.

In Malaysia Muslims and non-Muslims are registered since Muslims receive some benefits that non-Muslims don't.

That said I am still surprised at this sentence as Malaysia is fairly moderate in regard to Islam. As someone who has drank a lot of beer in Malaysia I'm going to think twice about ordering that Tiger next time I am there.

So Islamic law is different than Islam? Because we know Islam is a peaceful religion.

I thought Malaysia doesn't practise Islamic Law at all? Aren't they practising Common Law after the British reign?

I remember that time when I travelled to Malaysia, the tourist guide told me that to many other Islamic Countires, like those in Middle East and Indonesia, Malaysia is not an Islamic Country as they do not pratise Islamic Law to rule their country.

My best guess this is not nationwide, more like a State Law.

I wonder who's the informer, it cannot be the pub, so there are disguised religious police patrolling the pubs there all the time?

I saw the picture of a lashed convict once. You can act tough in front of your computer but I very sure many here will cry like a pig after the first hit.

i guess i should comment considering that im malaysian, muslim and i do drink sometime.

if u guys really read the article, you would learn that she couldve appealed the sentence and choose to pay the fine, as did the 2 other people caught with her. she chose to be caned instead, maybe she thinks she deserves it, maybe she thinks it would raise the issue of having 2 different sets of laws to govern muslims n non muslims publicly, maybe she knows the caning is gonna be nothing (like mentioned in the article), maybe she has a steel pair of buns, maybe she likes that sort of thing, i cant possible know. but she couldve appeal the caning, she chose not to.

how it is in malaysia. if ur a non-muslim, its fine. if youre a muslim, but youre a foreigner, its still fine. if youre a muslim and malaysian and youre damn unlucky enough that it was that one time every few months that the police decides they need to do some checks in the bars, pubs, nightclubs, then youre gonna be taken to the police station, maybe spend a night, get bailed, set a court date, make the date, plead guilty, appeal, pay a fine.

i guess this is how the malaysian law body interprets islamic law. you get caught (say drinking), this is what youre supposed to be punished with (caning or jail). but youre sorry and you feel bad for what you did and you learned your lesson (appeal)? well we guess it isnt so bad in the big picture but as long as you learned your lesson, we'll let you get away with a slap on the wrist (fine, summon, community work, etc)

anyway, as a muslim, i think its unfair for me to have more restrictions with what i can do on a night out compared to a non-muslim. and then theres no way i can jump on the other side without getting into more ****.

why is it that theres always the same group of people here that absolutely need to unnecessarily point out that they think religion or islam is stupid. we get it. you think its dumb.

Thanks for sharing though I thought it is not smart to admit you drink alcohol here. ;)

its more like we have 2 sets of laws. 1 for non muslims, and then the other one is tacked on to the first one and that is for muslims. things like cant drink, cant have sex wthout getting married, cant gamble, etc.

youre right abt the state thing. they differ slightly. not to say if you drink in this state, you get the death sentence. the punishment is same throughout the country, but states like kelantan, i think do not allow the sale of liquor. and maybe terengganu and pahang. some cities do not allow the sale of liquor in convenience store.

getting liquor in msia is not a difficult thing. i think we have the biggest brewery in south east asia.

I think she got off light. I was arrested for carrying a durian into a taxi cab. Then I flashed my passport, and I was off to the sweet, sweet mega mall in central KL.
