DREAMer: as regards the death penalty, remember it is a jury of her PEERS that decides her innocense or guilt with which is associated a penalty. So it's not just our government run amok killing those of us it is inclined to. ------------------ "How far you go in life depends on you being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak. I just heard about this and I couldn't eat. This is a huge, huge tragedy. I feel so horribly for the father. As far as I see it, death penalty in this case is worthless. It solves nothing. She's probably not a threat to anyone, and by living, she won't be given the favor of death. Instead, she should be locked up for life, with pictures of her children all over the cell. ------------------ CC.net's most courteous driver Oh yeah, and I'm looking for a job right now, so hire me please
Beto described a good alternative to the death penalty in the Tim McVeigh thread. Tim should be in a 6 x 6 cell right now, with no visitation, no TV, no books, no conversation, and no tools which he could use to kill himself. Tim should be locked up for the rest of his life with nothing to ponder but his conscience (which is a universal trait). This woman could be given life without parole in an isolated cell with pictures of her children, but some people would argue that it would be cruel and unusual punishment just like the death penalty. I was once very pro death penalty, but now I'd rather see an alternative non permanent punishment. [This message has been edited by Smokey (edited June 20, 2001).]
RichRocket, But, the government makes the punishment legal. If the death penalty were not an option, those same PEERS would still be convicting at the same rate. Besides, the court system is one branch of our government. ------------------ DREAMer's Rocket Page
It all comes back to the will of the people. We elect the legislators who make the laws. We elect the judges or our elected representatives select and/or approve of them. Individual citizens participate in the judicial system as jurors to determine the fate of the accused. At every step along the way, individual citizens have had input in determining the system and the deliverance of justice. Your earlier remarks seemed to suggest some kind of imposition on the citizenry, when all along there is constant participation. ------------------ "How far you go in life depends on you being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak. Sounds like something Frank Black should investigate out of those "Millineum" shows... ------------------ Rarely is the question asked: Guns kill squirrels than REDRUM to fools across the nation?
One of my sisters could not bear children, even after years of trying everything. So, they decided to adopt. She was desperately trying to adopt a child when that mother several years ago drowned all her kids in the Bayou. My sister cried for three days when she heard about it. Later, we located a baby of a Salvadorian refugee, which she adopted. Then, a little 13 month old crack baby. So now she has two. I know that there are childless couples in Houston today who must be weeping for the children they could have loved as their own. God in heaven, I don't know how or why these things happen. ------------------ Some days you eat the bear. Some days the bear eats you.
I'm sure the fathers on the board will say this hits you very hard, and makes you want to hug your kids and make sure they're OK. Particularly when I read that the father accompanied three of his children over at a neighbor's birthday this past weekend. I can't imagine losing one, but 5 -- and your wife as well basically? I'm just incredibly sad for him. ------------------ NOTHING BUT .NET CLUTCHCITY.NET

When I told my girlfriend about this, she says "Damn, they should take that b**** out!" I said, "Hello? This happened in Texas. The minute they find her guilty where you think she is headed in about 2 months?" She will be saying hello to Satan and offering him some Blue Bell Ice Cream to try and cool down about this time next year. ------------------ Sleepless in the Bronx
I can't quite figure out why some people oppose the death penalty. They say it is too cruel, or that it is too great a power to give the government, that it isn't appropriate to give government jurisdiction over life and death, and -- what else? But when something like this happens, they say time to make an exception, or death is too good for her, or we should lock her up with pictures of her children so she can be tortured with remorse for years on end, or -- what else have we said in this thread? Where is the compassion that death-penalty opponents are supposed to have? I support the death penalty myself, and would be ok with it if a jury thought it appropriate in her case. But, at least I feel sorry for her: for the sin she has committed, for the loss she has suffered (at her own hands), and for the punishment that will ultimately be inflicted upon her. Certainly, it was an awful thing for her to have murdered her children. But, revenge is simply not an appropriate reaction. ------------------ RealGM Gafford Art Artisan Cakes
Evil cannot be purged with a dark heart...the consoling thing for me is to know that these children have not met the end, they are in a better place with angels to play with. ------------------ Rarely is the question asked: Guns kill squirrels than REDRUM to fools across the nation?
Who watches The Practice? You know what Plan B is, right? So, what would your Plan B be? To blame the father for abuse and mental cruelty? How would you do that?
Plan B is to forgive. We can be free when we let go. ------------------ Rarely is the question asked: Guns kill squirrels than REDRUM to fools across the nation?
A recent history of infanticide from the Houston Chronicle. http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/metropolitan/949111 The slaying of five children in Clear Lake on Wednesday is the worst case of infanticide in the Houston area in recent memory. Authorities suspect the children's mother killed them by drowning them in the family bathtub. The Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that a parent is most often the perpetrator in the deaths of children ages 5 and under. Other similar cases in the area include: · Timothy Lee Rumsey, 42, fatally shot his children -- Kirstie, 7, Dylan, 9, and Brittany Whalen, 11 -- and then himself last February in Katy during a standoff with police. He had barricaded himself in their home after his wife, Joy, went to police about his abusive behavior. · Rowlett housewife Darlie Routier, 31, was sentenced to death in the 1996 fatal stabbing of her son, Damon. Her 6-year-old son, Devon, was also killed in the attack. She claimed a stranger broke into her home and stabbed them before knifing her. · Nirmala Devi Katta, 28, murdered her three children -- Jessica, 3, Jonathan, 4, and Anil Kumar, 6 -- and her husband, Ashok Katta, 37, with a pistol in 1996. She used gasoline to set fire to their Stafford home before killing herself. Police attributed her actions to domestic violence. · Juana Marie Leija threw six of her seven children into the murky waters of Buffalo Bayou in 1986. Two of them -- Juana, 5, and Judas Dimas, 6, -- drowned before rescuers jumped in and saved the others. She attributed her actions to years of domestic abuse at the hands of her husband. She received 10 years' probation in the deaths. --
Yes, with her grave depression, her reason could be that she thought she was saving her kids from a terrible life of domestic violence. It has happened before. It is certainly the first thing I thought of when finding out she called the police, and looking at her photo. I am pretty sure if my sister's daughter became a victim, my sister would go from incredibly loving mother to insane protecter. That will not only be Plan B. It will be Plan A. Forgive is right! very sad!
I watched the father speak to the media this morning. His wife called him yesterday and told him the children were hurt. He asked who? to which she replied all of them. His mother helps his wife take care of the children by taking one home during the day. On the drive home he was praying that at least his oldest son was safe with his mother, but unfortunately he was not. The police had been at the home before the father arrived. The father said his first concern is to make sure his children get a proper burial. Obviously he is saddened and shocked at what happened yesterday. He said he saw no signs that his wife was going to snap. He said that he loves his wife, and that her family and his are concerned for her. He wants to help her get better. The father added that he will discuss with her family about getting her a lawyer. The father made it clear that it was not his wife who killed his children. His wife loved her children. Something came over her (she couldn't control her actions). From the pictures of his wife yesterday and this morning in court, she does not realize what she has done. She looked expression less before the judge. ------------------

I was watching the news at 4 and saw an interview. He said he was going to stand by his wife. I was thinking "Holy smokes he's crazier than his wife." Then he said that it wasn't her wife that killed them, etc. Wow, this is unconditional love right there. I probably would not ever speak to my wife again and push for her to be locked up forever. But this guy is standing by her through the whole thing..... This raises another question - would you stand by your wife in this situation? ------------------
