I don't have a problem with the game being played at Robertson Stadium, but I have a huge problem with being forced to buy tickets to three games when I only want to go to one. I think I'll just throw a party at my house. To hell with Up, er, Gladchuck! ------------------ "Blues is a Healer" --John Lee Hooker
Haven, we've been winning 9 games a year, but we have bigger expectations. There was no reason for us to lose games like NC State and Stanford in the last two years. Anyways, if UH wants to play in that dump of a stadium then fine. This game will be a home game for the Horns. We have a tremendous alumni presence in Houston and they'll show up in hordes. These rich alumns will have no problems shelling out the $90 bucks for the "Texas Trifecta." I bet that the Dome would sell out if the game were held there though. That means more money for UH. I've gotta hand it to the UH AD though. At least he's making an effort to bring football back to the hood...err..UH. If UH fans do show up they will be disappointed by the beating they take and probably won't return. As for Horns football next year, the Faggies are not a threat, even in Kyle. RC Scrotum will continue to drive that program into the ground. Poooor Aggies. We have only one big game- OU. I can't wait for TX-OU. We're all waiting for payback. Beat the hell outta OU. NM State- blowout NC- blowout at Houston- blowout Tech- easy win OU- all out war at OSU- easy win Colorado- playing at home, no problem at Mizzou- easy win at Baylor- blowout Kansas- blowout at A&M- pooooor aggies Big XII Championship- beat NU Rose Bowl- beat Florida National Champs ------------------ "Oh No..." -Bill Walton in 97 just before Stockton's buzzer beater
Baqui99: Yeah, those losses sucked. But it seems that almost every very good, but not incredible, team either has a major scare or loses to a lesser team once per year. Just seems normal... happened to OK and FSU last year, even. ------------------ Lacking inspiration at the moment...
Kagy, they aren't really similar, it's just strikes me as them worried more about money that just playing football. ------------------ www.swirve.com "Pre-born, you're fine, pre-school, you're f*****."-George Carlin
Let's take a step back and look at what Mack Brown has accomplished at Texas: 1998: Took a 4-7 team and turned it into a 9-3 team; beat Top Ten teams in Nebraska and Texas A&M. The win at Nebraska snapped the Huskers' 47-game home winning streak. Whipped a good Mississippi State team in the Cotton Bowl. The last time we'd beaten A&M and won a bowl game in the same season prior to 1998? 1981. 17 years, man. 1999: Took a team that had lost Ricky Williams and its only deep threat, Wane McGarity, to the Big 12 South title. That team was 9-2 and ranked 6th before losing, in order, an emotionally unique game at A&M following the Bonfire collapse, a rematch with a Top-5 Nebraska team in the Big 12 title game, and a bowl game against Arkansas where four starters were ineligible following suspension. 2000: Won 9 games for the third straight year; last time Texas had strung together three straight nine-win seasons was 1981-1983. None of the losses was particularly enjoyable, but remember that Brown's first recruiting class (the one he frantically cobbled together after taking the job, not the stud-laden first complete class) were juniors in 2000. That means that his first stud class was in its collective sophomore year. Texas is on the right track. There is now quality talent and quality depth at each position (with the possible exception of the defensive line), something that was not true even last year. Texas is under a lot of pressure to produce, both for the reasons that have been cited here as well as the example Oklahoma set last year (winning a national title in Bob Stoops' second season). However, looking at the big picture, Texas is building towards something grand and just as importantly, something that will last. Brown has not taken the quick-fix approach to rebuilding Texas; for that reason, we're not going to go 12-1 or 13-0 and then sink back to mediocrity. His Florida State influences are evident in his approach: Texas is revving up to speed, and when we hit our stride, the result will be a consistent place among the elite. ------------------ "It's a funny thing, 'friends' You got beginnings and you got ends I guess I'll see you when we're ashes again-- Chris Robinson
RM, yeah, I can definitely see that... I think we're spoiled. It's the 800-lb gorilla throwing its weight around. That approach really turns people off; I think that's why we're so hated. UT has a ways to go before it approaches the antipathy Notre Dame generates, but we're getting there. My opinion is, if UH wants to ignore the fundamental concept of satisfying consumer demand (i.e., using a larger stadium to accomodate the demand) just so it can say it plays its games on campus, then fine. We weren't specific in saying "You gotta use the Astrodome" when the contract was signed, so they are within their rights to approach this from an angle of abject stupidity. Actually, that's not fair. It's not stupid at all-- sure, UH will not make anywhere near as much money on the game, but this way their fans will not be outnumbered at a home game the way they would if the game was moved to the Astrodome. Anyway, Texas' answer ought to be, "OK, we'll play at Robertson this one last time, but if you want to play us again, you're going to have to earn your way into a BCS bowl and match up with us that way. We're through playing you in the regular season."

We're through playing you in the regular season." Good point. UH should know that this is going to discourage big schools from playing them. Texas has made it's share of public relations gaffs... like when they ditched Hawaii. But the difference is that it's very profitable and prestigious to play Texas... but not UH. Sort of sad that the big guys can afford to behave worse... but true. IP ------------------ Lacking inspiration at the moment...
That's why it bothers me, to be honest. The Aggies should always remain at the top of everyone's hate list, stuff like this isn't helping. ------------------ www.swirve.com "Pre-born, you're fine, pre-school, you're f*****."-George Carlin

haven, Mack Brown was the former coach at North Carolina. Mack built the UNC program from 1-10 his first year to back to back 10 win seasons in 1996 and 1997. The knock on Mack at UNC was that he racked up impressive win totals but was never able to win a conference title or defeat Florida State. The folks at UNC consider Mack a traitor for leaving the school. Mack wanted to coach at a school that put football first. Mack has always been a good recruiter. Like SamCassell said, every recruiting class he has had at Texas have been rated top 10 maybe top 5 by the experts. The 1999 class was number 1 in the country pulling in Chris Simms and Cory Redding. Mack is the highest paid coach in the country never to win a conference title. He also received a raise last season. Mack has been given everything he could ask for. Mack has a chip on his shoulder. He has been labeled as the coach that can't coach big games. UT looked unprepared and outcoached versus Oklahoma. That **** should not happen against a rival. A year earlier, Mack's special teams forgot the fundamentals of how to get off a punt without being blocked. Expectations are very high this season. CNNSI has Texas rated as a preseason # 2. College Football News has us winning the national championship. Texas has not finished in the top 10 since the early 1980's. Mack has had time to put together his team. The pressure to win has increased with OU's title. Stoops won it with less talent and time. There's no Nebraska or K-State in the regular season. Texas expects to win the title every year...now there are no more excuses. ------------------
Smokey: That seems endemic to Texas as much as Mack Brown. The first Texas football game I ever want to was the Cotton Bowl against Miami... ranked #5, yet they lost horribly. It seems that, for years, Texas has had great players, won games they weren't supposed to, but never been consistent enough to win the big one. I wonder if it's something with the system? I don't know how much regimens change once there's a new coach. And Mack Brown might not have beat FSU... but he *has* beaten Nebraska! ------------------ Lacking inspiration at the moment...
The U of H has lined up big name opponents like Notre Dame and Tennessee in the coming years. U of H plans to play them at Reliant Stadium or the completely finished Robertson Stadium (52,000). ------------------
Smokey: But that was *before* the controversy . ------------------ Lacking inspiration at the moment...
And when it counted, the Big XII Championship Game, Texas was run out of San Antonio by Nebraska. ------------------
Just want to clear up a couple misstatements. “I have a huge problem with being forced to buy tickets to three games when I only want to go to one.” UH allocated 10K tickets to the University of Texas a LONG time ago, that has not changed. 10K is a lot of tickets for a road team, how many does UT get when the go play, Texas Tech, Baylor, KSU, Colorado, A%M? The tickets remaining can be used to sell the Trifecta package. Attendance: “I bet that the Dome would sell out if the game were held there though.” The attendance at the last 2 UT-UH games held at the dome: 26,163 in 1993 and 32,520 in 1995……. Granted the UT BANDWAGON is in full affect, but to say that the Dome would sell out is not 100% accurate. In regards to playing at Robertson instead of the Dome. “. It's not stupid at all-- sure, UH will not make anywhere near as much money on the game.” UofH would receive ZERO money of concessions or parking. At Robertson they get 100% of the gate, concession, parking etc….plus they don’t have to pay to rent the stadium. EVEN if 80K showed up, as opposed to 40K, the monetary difference would be minimal, if there was one at all. Also, not sure the last time you watched a football game in the Dome, but it is HORRIBLE! The sightlines at Robertson are excellent, I think the UT fans that attend will be pleasantly surprised. Robertson has become a very nice venue to watch football, and it is getting better. Personally, I think UT fans INISISTING or expecting another team to move their HOME game is a tad bit overbearing and arrogant. On a UT note, I agree with Kagy, about Mack Brown. He is doing great things there, it amazes me when I hear some UT fans there claiming the PRESSURE is on Mack to produce this year! Ridiculous. ------------------ Now this shirt is chafing me
Three 9 win seasons in a row would be considered SUCCESS at a school like UH, but we consider it progress. Like Mack says "We expect to win!" No one puts more pressure on Mack than Mack. We expect to be in contention if not win the national championship every year. The pressure comes from our history of success. We strive to be number 1 in academics and athletics every year. I'm sorry if it sounds ridiculous, but its TEXAS. Kagy showed a man building a program, something Dimel is trying to do in Houston minus our resources. Frustration with Mack Brown does not equal Fire Mack. Mack is the best coach for the Longhorns. The pressure is on Mack to produce every year. ------------------
Bubba is no longer on the team. Kelly Robertson, a transfer is the leading candidate, but there are several freshman that will challenge. ------------------ Now this shirt is chafing me
Mack's problem last year may have been his "I'm not quite sure we're reeady to be in the top ten...." This year, he has said that we will contend for the MNC, and I like that. Stoops said the same thing the year before last, and OU didn't expect as much from their team. And btw, this year's Horns is regarded as one of the two or 3 most talented teams in the country. ------------------ "norm, would you like to buy an indian scalp ? This deal isn't gonna make or break me Norm, so don't jerk me around." Harry Carey "Norm, if I had a mohawk scalp, I wouldn't be sitting here talking to you."
Smokey, I know MANY a UT fan who would want Mack fired if he doesn't produce to their expectations THIS season. That is what I think is ridiculous, that is just my opinion though. If you expect to be incontention for the MNC every year you must have been a pretty upset camper over the last 17 years that UT has finished outside of the top 10. Guess they are DUE, this year. I agree, I think Mack is the right Coach for UT. ------------------ Now this shirt is chafing me
gr8-1, I think that what Mack was ham-fistedly trying to do there was take some of the pressure off last year's team... eliminate some of the hype. It backfired on him, as it would any coach in that situation. If there are expectations, you cannot avoid them. I think Mack told them truth about last year-- he was right, Texas was simply not one of the ten best teams-- and ended up looking foolish for it when he was right. Ironic. 27-11 over three years is progress, all things considered. That ranks us 16th nationally in winning percentage over that time frame, ahead of programs like Ohio State, Texas A&M, and yes, Oklahoma. It's also better than any consecutive three year period UT's had since the aforementioned early-80s glory days. OU's national title made all us Orangebloods a little antsy. But when you take a deep breath, a big step back, and look at what Mack's assembled, we're in fine shape. As long as we win 11, 12, or 13 games this year. Anything less will be a colossal disappointment. PS, one note that should keep us all happy no matter what: Mack is 2-1 against the Aggies, and 2-1 against the Land Thieves. If he continues to win two-thirds of those games for the rest of his tenure here, then saint the man.
