I am not going to argue with you in every details. I prefer Bill for the following reasons: 1) JL3 is NOT a PG, not even for a backup, he is a mini-SG with no passing at all; 2) we need a PG, starter or backup; 3) We haven't seen Bill play enough to decide who is better, him or JL3, but JL3 is clearly not your option for a PG. In the limited minutes Bill got, he did show hes able to pass, OK, TO problem, since he only got 2 minutes to work for a few games, I didn't see much of that either. As far as I can remember, he only got some decent play time against Mavs for the first time and he did go wild for a TO but that should be nice assist if the other guy could catch it (during the fastbreak). His incapability of shooting is probably coming from the stress of JVG, once he missed, never know how long the bench time will be again. Ultimately, my opinion is, let Bill play, progress or turn into bust, one way or the other, at least you know what should you do next (to give him more time, or resort to the market). Currently part of our MLE is rotting on the bench, while JVG's only interested in several points that JL3 brings. Like you said yourself, IF Alston can turn it around, that indicates you are not sure either. Actually Alston has been in NBA for so many years, it is hard to imagine he would play his game up a notch at this time of his career. And even he can, we still need a solid backup who can pass the ball, you are not depending Tmac to do the job alone are you? And the answer should not be JL3, who else then? Again, for a tight game, JL3 may give you more immediate help, but when JL3 screw up one shot after another while the other 4 players can only watch him suck, why not give Bill a shot?
Dr. of Dunk, let me rephrase my last sentence: currently, JVG probably needs JL3's immediate help in scoring when the big 2 (or one of them) are out; but I think Bill should play if JL3 starts suck and put up his one man show without even thinking of the other 4 guys on the floor. When the big 2 are back, JL3 becomes more than abundant and we should play Bill much much more than JL3. JL3's get no potential at all to be a PG, that is, from my limited observation (could be wrong...).
The fundamental problem is that we don't have a decent backup at the point. Billy simply isn't ready. Not even close. He should get more minutes than he does when we are blowing out other teams, but there it is. Lucas, while clearly having learned a lot from his father, arguably the best point the Rockets had in their entire history, before falling victim to the white powder and his own weakness, hasn't learned to pass the ball. Highly ironic. I like the change of pace he brings when he's in the game. And he can score. The guy just hasn't learned to look for his teammates first, and his own shot second. Major, MAJOR flaw in his game. He's young, so perhaps he'll "get it," before he gets cut because of it. Lucas has improved, IMO, on his Moochie level defense, so that's something, but you can't teach height. (yes, a cliché) Using intelligence in his shot selection, and if he actually passes to the other guys on the floor, JLIII can make a home for himself playing limited minutes. If he doesn't, he'll make a home for himself in the D league. His choice.
