The number of homeless people here in Houston pales in comparison to most large cities in the U.S. We do not have a homeless epidemic unlike NY and LA. I don't see this as too big a problem....yet.
How about this. I get my ass out of bed every morning and I go to work. Since I was a kid, I always went to school and did whatever I had to do to get the job done. I busted my ass when I was tired, I lost girlfriends and friends when my work came between us and now I'm 30 years old and have managed to eek out a comfortable living for me and my wife. I'm sorry that their are homeless people and I'm sorry that our government doesn't do a better job of taking care of them. I'm a fairly liberal democrat and my voting history would show that the peole I've supported through the years made some effort towards helping the destitute. My point was simple. Every homeless person can sleep at a shelter. The fact that they find a public park more comfortable means little to me. I prefer not going to work, but if I don't I won't get paid. They prefer to sleep in park because they have a choice. I would prefer that they didn't have that choice. I give $1 every morning to an old man by my office. I take old clothes to the shelter at least once a year and have also spent $100 on blankets for the homeless at Christmas for the past 3 years. I know that most of them have dealt with serious problems over the years and are most likely unemployable, but that doesn't mean that they should be able to sleep in the small areas that the city has set aside for public recreation. If they want to panhandle on the corners, GREAT. But if they want to sleep, they need to go where it's allowed and encouraged. As for the tip jar, a fine idea. I'll give a little, having enjoyed the benefits of Clutchcity.net for some time. It's funny though, my earlier post was all about me and my oppinion. Your post was all about me and my oppinion too. Perhaps your time would of been better spent discussing your own views and how you would make the situation better rather than making negative comments about someone that has probably done more and donated more of his time to charity than 90% of the public and the other members of this BBS. I've been around here for some time and have met a number of your before. I enjoy the friendly banter and I wish threads like this would be locked before I get riled up. This place is for Rocket talk, if you would prefer to hear my oppinions on why God dooesn't exist or how Bush is destroying our country, then call me out in the Hangout. Problem is, I don't go there, because I only really care to talk about the Rockets here. I should of never posted in this thread, next time I'll know better.
Rocketsauce, I just wanted to have fun with the Terminator's quote. That was really the first thing that came to mind..."how can I use the 'tax tax tax' in this thread." I do enjoy your posts, and have probably never said so, but you are one of the GARM posters I look for. I apologize that I said "While you're complaining..." That probably came off sounding more personal than intended. cheers
No harm done. Someone please lock this thing up and get the damn season started already. At the very least lat's see some new uniform or logo designs. It's getting ugly around here. -Saucey
I'm a musician who plays and hangs out at The Engine Room club next door to the new arena. First of all, there is a homeless shelter and/or work facility connected to The Engine Room (on Pease). Now that the "Big Money" has moved in I wonder the fate of that whole area... You should understand that the homeless facility has been there awhile and they will probably be pushed out to some other location, so for those of you who find them an inconvenience, please show them respect. I have more to deal with working at the Engine Room than you do going to The Toyota Center. Don't fret white America, all will be ok!
News Break! The homeless people were there while the Rockets where playing in the Summit. Are you just now noticing the homeless? Its very sad but has nothing to do with basketball... Vibe, Keep your racism to yourself...you dont know the color of anyone posting in this forum.
You consider that racist? haha "Vibe, Keep your racism to yourself...you dont know the color of anyone posting in this forum."
Don't fret white America, all will be ok!--Vibe Is it not? We are sorry for all of your troubles down at the engine room. What kind of issues are there? are they homeless related?
We should put them in some kind of rehabillitative jail, I mean hell if were gonna pay for murderers and rapist and thieves to have a place to stay and eat , then we should be able to provide something for the homeless who at least are not knocking us in the head for our money. Its not just the rockets to blame, I personally feel like some of these big churches should be doing more to help our own people out first instead of taking those expensive tax rite off crusades all over the world just to magnify their own images. I pay tithe and I would just like to see more of it go to those that need it more, thats not saying to put them in big houses and give them a free ride, but obviously there is more that they can do thats being done right now.
Alright, lets run this over again, shall we......... Picture this. Your an Army vet who's served many years and suffered many injuries over the years. Those injuries came back to haunt you physically. It became tough for you to hold a job cause you could NOT do things like you used to when your were young and atheltic. Simple tasks needed to hold job are tough for you to preform. Thus, you are no longer "Hire-able" material for companies with job openings. Now, you have no money, you have lost you house, car, clothes etc.............and unfortunatly you have no family living to help you. Now your HOMELESS. One day, while your sleeping at Root Memorial Square, across the street from the Rockets new home being built, a police officer wakes you up and HANDCUFFS YOU. He tells you, "Your going to a REHABILITIVE JAIL!" Nine times out of ten, What will be your first question? "Why am I going to JAIL?" Why I say that is what you will ask? Cause Rehab and Jail are TWO different things. Rehab is to help people. Jail is for punishment. Yes the cop said Rehab Jail, but you will pay MORE attention to the worst part of what he said, being "Jail." And as far as you know, you have done NOTHING WRONG to be punished and thrown in Jail. You were an Army Vet who proudly served his counrty, but of late, has fallen on hard times. Why is the country you proudly served, now throwing you in "Jail?" How would that feel? Point is, all of these homeless people are NOT Jail material. They are all there for a reason, just like the story I gave you above. Truthfully, these kind of unfortunate sad stories happen in every day life. How they got there is different story, but one thing is still the same. They are human, just like us, and they need help. "Jail" is NOT the solution they need.
that's right. Let's sweep them into the delapitated Astros/Oilers neighborhood next to the new football stadium and let the ChokeCity.net fans with them.
Walk up and just get a job like that ? just like that? no questions? easier said than done my friend. its just a fact of life that everyone has to deal with. things have a way of working them- selves out. if every single one of us had college degrees, who's gonna be behind the counter fliping them burgers? Its all about balance. Its one of those issues that will never ever go away. we just have to monitor it and keep the numbers to a mininum.
I posted this thread not to cause arguments and disunity. I just felt sad to see people living like that while this country is so abudent with resources. Most of you made valid points but some of you are wack!!! Put the homeless in jail just for being homeless? Go to the shelter that is more dangerous than being in prison? Clean themselves up and go get a job? I know college graduates who have trouble finding a job in the declining market. If employers won't hire people with degrees, why would they hire someone from off the street? Do you know the kind of prejudice they would face for being homeless alone? Take into consideration their backgrounds, their history, their appearence. It's not as easy as you think. I posted cause we need to "wake up" and see the way our world is. Our world is a really sad place and the only way it is going to get better is by acting and becoming conscious of the world around us. It's all fun and nice to everyday ponder what the rockets unis look like, or trading the whole team for Lamar Odom, or thinking we are a player away from the title but once in awhile it is ok to talk about something REAL.
How abudant are this country's resources if college graduates cant get jobs? and our National Debt is now over the 500billion dollar threshhold? At least those homeless folks arent starving to death.
Perhaps you should have started this thread in the Hangout forum as opposed to a forum for Rcocket BS. It's great that you want to talk about real problems, but that's not why the rest of come here.
Actually, I beg to differ. I think this thread should have been in the ARENA forum since it refers to TC. Ahh.......but who gives crap where it belongs anyways. Its been a pretty interesting topic.
It was just a joke. No need for anyone to take offense. I myself am multi-colored. I have tan skin, brown hair, blue eyes and a red tongue! That's at least 2 or 3 things I have in common with black folks. Ok, so much for jokes. Yes, I've had some problems at the Engine Room. One is that they share the exact same physical building and parking lot. The homeless place threatens to tow trucks that are trying to load in/load out. One homeless guy would not go away and kept offering a sip off his wine bottle if the girl I was with would blow him. So, yeah, I've had some problems. But I got nothing against anyone who handles him or herself with respect. That's all I ask.
