I thought I'd start a dedicated thread to any home theater issues, discussions, etc. I'm looking at upgrading my setup for next school year. Right now I have a Sony 46'' Rear Projection TV, and nothing else surrounding it. Well, an XBOX but you know what I mean. I've already got the matching TV stand in my shopping cart, ready for next August. Next up, I'm trying to decide on a DVD player. The Denon 910 seems to be a very good buy, but another player has recently cropped up as a challenger. I present you the: http://www.samsung.com/Products/DVDPlayer/Hypervision/DVDPlayer_Hypervision_DVD_HD931.htm It upconverts the 480p picture from DVD to a 1080i output from DVI to the TV. It's not true HD, but it's definitely an improvement on 480p. And it's a very reasonable price. I know HD-DVD is just around the corner, but this is an awesome solution to last the 2 years until the HD-DVD format comes out in a widespread way. Opinions?
If you HD set has a DVI input then the Samsung woud seem to be the way to go. Basically everything i have read is that if you set has a DVI connection then its a noticable improvement over component. For the same price as the Denon 910 I really wouldnt even consider the Denon. I also dont think the Samsung has the chroma bug either but am not sure on this. Another simalar model with DVI is the Bravo D1. I would suggest hunting around for info on the Samsung and the Bravo on the avsforum.
The samsun has that froudja chip that deals with chroma. The one problem on it is that it fails blacker than black tests, but i think the AVIA cd can help with that. The Bravo is compared as better on some things, but I'd rather have the SAmsung I think.
I thought the same this with the Faroudja chip not having problems with the chroma bug. Both the Denon 900 and 910 have the chip and both have the bug. I would imagine that the samsung doesnt have it since it came out late last fall. I am looking around for a cheap player too and if i had an HD set i would probally choose the Samsung. Unfortunatly im stuck with an SD set for at least another year and a half. Something else to consider is that ecost cut their price on the Denon 2200 down to $275. If you are interested in DVD-A and SACD this is a real bargain. But if you only want it for movies its not worth it.
If you're doing research on audio/video equipment go to http://www.audioreview.com . This site has a lot of good information. Also, since you have an HDTV this site will help too http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?forumid=6
