Steps to fix this mold. 1. Fix the leak. 2. Clean out the water and dry the area with fans. 3. Clean with some Clorox and water. 4. Repeat step 2. Done. We live down the street from some "mold chaser" (people that go around the country doing "mold remediation" wherever the craze has hit and state's haven't limited insurance liability). He was bragging about how they charge tens of thousands and they mostly just dehumidify the air, clean any showing mold with bleach and cool down the house enough to kill off the mold. Somethings to think about: there is more mold outside in the air in Houston than in a "mold infected" house. ALL houses in Houston have some mold somewhere. State of Texas has limited the mold damages to $5000. That's why you really don't hear about it much anymore. Scientists, allergists all agree that it can't cause health problems. There is no such thing as "toxic" mold. It CAN irritate existing allergy problems, just the same way pollen, pet dander, dust mites, ect can. But you don't hear about TOXIC pollen, or TOXIC pet dander, or TOXIC dead skin particles. If you keep your house nice and cool with an AC in Houston it will dramatically decrease the spread of mold. So, in summary, that mold is not going to kill you...put on a particle mask, get under the sink and scrub. Fix the leak, keep the AC nice and cool and you have nothing to worry about.
