The good thing is that my wife won't be using much gas in her Prius having to drive to a Home Depot to throw away our bulbs.

Oh, my porch lights ARE fluorescent!

What a coincidence. I have a black friend that drives a Prius.

    Jesus....

Anyway. So uhh....what about having to drive to get the things recycled? Doesn't that mean we're wasting just as much (if not more) fossil fuel as well as our time, gas money, etc. to throw these things away? I'm asking honestly here....I don't buy them for that exact reason and that they're more expensive.

I know some people who just throw the things into the regular trash....what does that do?

If any of you can un-bunch your panties enough to answer, I'd appreciate it.

Probably not a big deal given that Home Depot is apparently trying to build one store in every square mile of the United States. Here in the clear lake area, there are two within ~5 miles, with a third planned, and another one just up by BW8. Crazy...

Depends. Mercury itself is not all that bad for humans. Methylated mercury is the bad stuff. Assuming CFLs put in the trash go to the stereotypical landfill, the mercury will seep down the mountain of nastiness until it hits a clay barrier. At which point it won't do much unless said barrier fails. Of course, if that event occurs, the tiny amount of mercury from CFLs is not going to be the primary concern.

I'm guessing people would not just deliver the bulbs to be recycled. They would need something at Home Depot and since they are going there then they might as well drop-off the recycle material.

It's likely all in his head. Mercury poisoning doesn't have those symptoms.
