I get what you're saying, but the best evidence we have in this case is that this guy believes that his pin equals his spirituality. They offered him other, company approved pins, but he refused, after which he sued them for enforcing their dress code. Even if he is the most devout Christian in the world, he acted stupidly.

The company acted stupidly. "You can't wear that pin, you have to wear a pre-approved Home Depot politically correct pin. If you don't, you're fired!"

Agree, but that is their right. Dude can try to work at non-stupid companies (if he can find any), and you and I can avoid Home Despot to punish them for their stupidity. (God knows that I avoid them.)

How is that stupid? Home Depot is in the business of selling home supplies, not starting holy wars.

Wes is spot on. How could this be offensive to customers? They never see the employees at HomeDepot.

That pin wasn't starting holy wars. He had worn it for over a year

Yes, it's their right. And it's my right to complain about it in the Clutch BBS D&D poo-slinging forum. :D

But if my fridge breaks down, I'm forgetting all about it and going straight to the Depot.

And your typical right-wing issue-dodging says it all, too. So I'll make is easy: answer with a simple YES or NO.

Do you choose to be born Hispanic? YES or NO
(Hint: the answer is "No". Hispanic is a racial distinction, not a cultural or language distinction)

Do you choose to follow a religion? YES or NO
(Hint: the answer is "Yes". Religion is a belief system. Belief requires choice.)

Some things go unnoticed. I remember working at a Frito-Lay factory and you could not wear any jewelry while working except a wedding ring/band. I wore my tongue ring for nearly three years before a supervisor finally noticed and told me to remove it. Did I know it was against company policy? Yes. Did I keep wearing it? Yes. When finally caught and told to take if off did I do so? Yes.

He was not following the rules of the company he worked for so he basically had two options, comply or bye bye.

Well, if a paying customer complained about it (as silly as that may seem), it hurts the bottom line.

Companies have the right to tell their employees how to dress. Period. Really it's no more complicated than that. It doesn't matter if he's worn it for a minute or a decade. They told him to take it off, he refused, they fired him. That's it.

I mean, most people who refuse to do what their boss says to do are fired, no? I thought that was pretty much common sense.

Waiting for somebody to comeback with an argument such as:

"So if your boss tells you to blow him...."

I tend to find that the Christians who make an honest attempt to be Christ-like don't spend time/energy battling over pins, pledges or currency. MadMax's post(s) seem to reflect that.

This kid may be a great, great example of what Christians *should* aspire to be but he is wrong here. It sounds to me like the management even looked the other way until he brought his Bible to work (which I have no problem with). As other have stated, that indicates he may have gone from simply wearing a non-approved pin to proselytizing people there.

To me, this is a very cut and dry situation. Home Depot isn't interested in having employees endorsing any religion while they are on the job. You can try to make the argument that what he was doing was patriotic but he specifically declined a pin that did not refer to God which reveals his real agenda. Why would any smart corporation allow religious endorsements into the work place when the law clearly supports them if they do not?

Well, they're just asking for trouble. They should have thought of that before putting the minaret aisle so close to the menorah counter.

If it's company policy, it's pretty cut and dry.

Please name one company where that is legally the policy.
