again, it was mandatory in 1908, so unless that is when the cold war was, you are incorrect.

Yeah, I don't mean to criticize anyone who would put a fish on their car. That's not a determination of someone's heart or authenticity in their faith. I know people who wear Christian t-shirts who are deeply, deeply seeking to follow and to love God and other people.

I just hate that THIS is what the Church seems to fight over. We go balls out so we can put a Ten Commandments monument in a courthouse or so we can wear a freaking pin that says "God" on it....but we ignore the injustices of the world far too often. We're really big on having people respect our rights...and yet our model is a man who was hung on a cross unjustly....and his followers who gave their own lives for him and his truth.

Love is irresistible....this fighting for your rights is just common and the way of the world. The Church CLAIMS to be more than that, because Jesus was.

I understand, there are alot of people who think that way because they are led that way by their religious frame of reference, pastors, tv, radio , whatever

they think they are doing some good or something positive

he obviously thinks his free expression of religion is being violated, I don't agree but I understand

that's it, a little more understanding of our fellow humans, in Home Depot, Wal Mart, and the local Pub

I would probably would love this guy and the one who fired him

There I just made an issue out of it, not you :)

Religion and culture are usually intertwined. It is you who is making the personal judgment of what is and is not culture.

And I'm all in favor of Home Depot making their own rules. I just don't care for the hypocritical reactions.

i don't know if this is the right place for this or not, and this is really more of a vent than anything else, but i received an e-mail from my sister yesterday about a friend of my niece who suddenly found out that his heart was having issues and that they didn't know if medicine would help it or if he would have to go on a transplant list.

i read the story in a journal by the mom and every smart thing thing they did, like go to the dr when symptoms arose or didn't take a medicine because it could've adversly affected him were "god made us do this" or something similar. they found out yesterday that he will not need a transplant and the response from everyone was "GOD IS AWESOME!" and the like. my question is...where were the "WHY IS GOD DOING THIS TO US" exclamations when he first got sick. if god is so awesome for the positive outcome, why isn't he to blame for him getting sick in the first place?

sorry and feel free not to respond if this is too much of a threadjack.

    What am I incorrect about?

How is it incorrect that 'In God We Trust" was made mandatory on all currency due to reactionary politics from the Cold War era?

Tell me, Casey. Otherwise stop putting words in my mouth.

    He works in mysterious ways.

    ;)

I've asked that question before, why does God get all the blame for the good in the world but none of the blame of the bad? I almost always get the "mysterious" quote.

    yep

    stinks too

let's get together and catch up

wasn't frustrated by your posts, think I know you, love you alot

He should have just had it tatooed on his arm then they could have asked him to wear a long sleeve shirt and he could have got all pissed about that

As a pastor I just get tired of both sides of these things

I try to empty my pocket of stones but something in my nature just keeps picking them up

dude, that's a great, great question. i wish i had an easy answer, but if i did it would appear canned, anyway.

think of my own story...the one you know of me. miraculous end...but why was it necessary to begin with? there are lots of theologians much smarter than me who've addressed this question, too....C.S. Lewis wrote, "The Problem with Pain" which is pretty good.

but maybe the answer is in your FAVORITE movie, Signs :) :

"People break down into two groups when the experience something lucky. Group number one sees it as more than luck, more than coincidence. They see it as a sign, evidence, that there is someone up there, watching out for them. Group number two sees it as just pure luck. Just a happy turn of chance. I'm sure the people in Group number two are looking at those fourteen lights in a very suspicious way. For them, the situation isn't fifty-fifty. Could be bad, could be good. But deep down, they feel that whatever happens, they're on their own. And that fills them with fear. Yeah, there are those people. But there's a whole lot of people in the Group number one. When they see those fourteen lights, they're looking at a miracle. And deep down, they feel that whatever's going to happen, there will be someone there to help them. And that fills them with hope. See what you have to ask yourself is what kind of person are you? Are you the kind that sees signs, sees miracles? Or do you believe that people just get lucky? Or, look at the question this way: Is it possible that there are no coincidences?"

I can definitely confirm this is a much better topic over Christmas Ale ;)

rhester, FWIW, I don't have a problem with the guy wearing the pin. I have a problem with him suing HD for not letting him wear the pin.

But you're right, I probably did assume too much about him because of all this. MadMax summed up my feelings on all this nonsense better than I did.

I can't speak for them, but if you think people of faith who go through terrible things don't struggle MIGHTILY with this question, I don't know what to tell you except that - believe me when I tell you - they DO.

One more thought on this....there is this notion in the Church today..and there has been probably for a very long time, it's just very vocal and pronounced today through big churches that love media time....that God is all rainbows and rose gardens. That making some commitment to follow Him means it's all good from here on out.

I can't tell you how wrong that notion is. The Bible is chock-full of stories about people deeply committed to God suffering awful things....and retaining faith, anyway...and seeking to live it out in love of God and humanity.

The obvious example is Jesus..."If you're gonna follow me, be aware...I don't have a place to rest my head. Measure the cost carefully before you make any big decisions about me." (my paraphrase) Leading to horrific death on torturous execution instrument while screaming, "God, God...why have you forsaken me? why have you turned your back on me???"

John the Baptist...Jesus calls this guy the best man who has ever lived. He lived out in the wilderness eating locusts...his reward for faith? His head was cut off and served on a platter at the request of a king.

Paul...suffered all kinds of illnesses, imprisonment, shipwreck..etc....kept going.

Habbakuk (among other Old Testament prophets) - watching their world crumble around them...watching their people, supposedly God's people, be persecuted and enslaved....calling Him out....maintaining faith.

Outside of the Bible, Mother Theresa comes to mind....she sees all kinds of suffering...her diaries indicate she suffered her fair share of doubts..."where are you, God, in all of this???" Never, ever does she stop loving and serving.
