El Paso has some of the lowest crime in the country. Unless there's a reason a Mexican drug cartel is looking for you specifically, I don't think anyone should fear going to El Paso. Mexico City is also still pretty safe for tourists. I don't think people should overreact. I think the problem is bad enough to justify changing some of our domestic policy to impact the dynamics in Mexico. But, apparently, Mexico gets a pretty cold reception from Republicans in our government, judging from the last visit by their president.
All this from a country whose star soccer player looks like Lindsay Lohan's ex-girlfriend. Go figure.
I don't remember reading about the be-headings....thrown down mine shafts...mass graves....mass shootings.... from Camden or East St. Louis.
Geez, that is some crazy stuff. Brutal. Don't travel to drug ridden states. You are fine in tourist areas like Mayan Riviera. I had my wedding in Playa Del Carmen last month and all was fine. In fact, we are going back in October. This isn't keeping me away from enjoying the beautiful beaches. Just use common sense when you are in Mexico. When have you heard a tourist being a victim of drug war? Not often..if so, then they were in wrong place at wrong time unless they were drug dealers. I did hear that they found 6 bodies in a cenote close to Cancun the weekend after we got back from Mexico. One of them was Playa Del Carmen's head of security. Scary. Stay at the resort at night and don't go out at night in deserted areas unless it's in an area like 5th ave with lots of people. Tourist attractions like Xcaret was very safe.
I remember reading about beheadings (Orchard Park) and mass shootings (Columbine, Killeen, etc) If anything if there wasn't such a high demand for narcotics in the USA there would be no drug war in Mexico. These are blood drugs. People's desire to get high is leaving blood all over Mexico. That's the real problem.
so I like to get high, therefore someone's thrown down a shaft? yes demand fuels the trade, but not the brutality.
You do know that what he's saying is that the ones killing each other are the drug dealers who want the territory and sell the most drugs to the USA, don't you? Dealers don't just go around killing tourists and local peeps unless they stand in their way... that's why it's rampant in border towns.
I understand exactly what he's saying, its the demand in the US fueling the war. that obviously ignores the other dynamics that feed into the war, the same dynamics that drive millions of Mexicans to come over here for a better life.
^ Ok, cool. I just want to point out that these stories about people killing other people and gunfights are not between civilians and drug dealers, but drug dealers themselves and the military... it IS bad, but it affects tourists less than you think. Go ahead and get any drugs down there and get high, if you want, but if you buy from the wrong dealer or wrong group, yes, you might find yourself in a huge hole that's what SHE said.
the kidnappings are of regular civilians though also there have been a couple of stories of the drug gangs shooting people in rehab clinics, although the gangs claim those people owe them money
Civilians that live there. Those people are studied for a long time before any move is made. Staying for a few days means your chances of getting kidnapped are zilch.
^^ HOLY CRAP, I forgot about that. Yes, this is true... and also, it's people whom the kidnappers know will pay the money they ask for. Thank you for this, sir.
