I find it completely believable that he was misquoted. That being said, I tend to agree with the spirit of the analogy.
I have always thought of the United States as a very muscular teenager that lives on the same block as a bunch of old men (Europe, Asia). The old men have seen fist fights many times in their lives, have won a few and lost a few. They understand that fights are are a bad idea in general and are usually create more problems than they resolve. The teenager does not understand that (yet) and so jumps into conflicts with other neighbors that are not his business, creating trouble for himself and others on the block.
BTW for any of you that are thinking about the whole "then maybe you should move to France too ya lib!" I love this country, and not just because I am blindly ignorant of what other countries have. There are political systems in the world that we could learn from, but the one factor that makes this the best country in the world is that we have the freedom to express our opinions about our government in general and our leaders in particular.
Oh and John Ashcroft is a wimpering puppy with an annoying bark who's master needs to put back in his cage before he nips the wrong person. Or sings again.

bamaslammer misguidedly seeks to quote Mark Twain in defense of an imperialist war or a cririque of Depp.

Twain lived outside the US for 10 years, and when he came back, become active in the Anti Imperialist League which opposed a similar war and occupation to the Iraq one we have gone on now-- the Philipines.

"To be a patriot, one had to say, and keep on saying, 'Our Country, right or wrong,' and urge on the little war. Have you not perceived that that phrase is an insult to the nation?" - Mark Twain

do a google for Mark Twain and anti imperialism.
