Not picking on you, Timing, but what I have quoted leads me to ask this question:

If you are living in another country like France, then you are an expatriate, right? So, if Depp really has disdain for the US like he says in this interview, how can he be capable of patriotism towards the US? If he is going to be patriotic, wouldn't it be more towards France? Or am I just not thinking about this correctly?

I'm sure someone will let me know real quick if I am not thinking about this right:D

They are both extreme. They are just coming from completely opposite directions. I can guarantee you that if a Democrat were in the White House, the commentators on 950 would be bashing America, just like they did from 1992-2000. The bottom line is that the talking heads on both stations are entertainers, rather than experts.

I am pretty much a conservative on most of the issues. I don't agree on everything, and I don't hesitate to criticize conservatives or Bush. Like I have said before, I think Bush probably lied, or at least exaggerated, and made several mistakes with regards to Iraq. But I still support the war and the administration for the most part. If you consider that a "tactic" to trick liberals on the BBS, so be it. I never claimed to be a centrist, however, there is nothing really extreme about my views.

The way I look at it, these days conservatives don't feel the need to toe the party line, while liberals need to be anti-war, anti-Bush, anti-business, etc. or they will be "litmused" out of the party. I think the Republicans have more tolerance to opposing viewpoints within the party right now. Look at how Cruz Bustamante can't even denounce the identity politics of Mecha.

As far as being a neo-con, I'm not exactly sure what a neo-con is yet.

it seems to me the backlash against quotes like these come from a pretty large segment of society that is just saying, "enough already with the b****ing! no..the united states is not a perfect nation. but we're pretty damn proud to be americans, nevertheless."

it just seems like an incessant barage of complaints...maybe that's just me, though.

that...and the fact that it comes from celebrities who feed off the very society they mock. as my brother-in-law said regarding Pearl Jam..."Communist? Cry me a freaking river..you jackasses are millionaires!" There's just a "consider the source" factor that makes you shake your head when someone who has done so well someplace and yet they degrade it at every turn and appear to be entirely ungrateful...as if their success is owed to them. i think that's where the frustration kicks in for many people.

having said that...haven't we had enough "us vs. them" stuff in this message board lately??? geez. it seems really funny to me because the "them" for me includes the only two people I've met and become friends with in real life from this board. this just gets silly.

When were conservatives ever bashing America? All I heard were the same type of arguments that we are hearing today- that Clinton didn't believe in the military when he was growing up and so it's no wonder he cut military spending. The closest I heard was after 9/11 when Falwell or Robertson said God was punishing America. That's about the most America bashing I've heard from the right.

I agree the 950 guys are entertainers, the people on Pacifica seem genuinely irate. Not that the conservatives aren't sincere in their anger, but half the time they are trying to be clever or sarcastic. Bottom line is the guys on Pacifica have a fundamentally different view of America.

Now THIS cracks me up! :D
If there is anything Democrats DON'T do, it's "toe the Party line".
Hell, most of them don't agree, much less know about a line, where it might be and where to find your toe.

And this is coming from a Democrat. :)

Our biggest weakness is that we're so divided.
Not that we have to "toe the Party line"!!

(I'm sorry, I'm dying from laughter here!)

Think about it. What would happen to a democrat who was pro-life? Or who opposed affirmative action? Or who thought we should drill in Alaska? Or supported the war fully? Or wanted to cut welfare? They wouldn't get too far. Too many litmus tests.

You are divided because you divide yourselves. Allow some diversity of thought and you won't have so many problems. Look at some prominent Republicans- Rudy Guiliani, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Andrew Sullivan (commentator). Not exactly your run of the mill "conservatives."

There was an article in the Washington Monthly about this but I couldn't find it.

I know Democrats who hold positions like pro-life and cutting welfare. What you're talking about are what you see as Democratic leaders, not Democrats in general. They are as diverse as they can be. The Democratic Party leadership is more diverse than you think, but you could make a better argument regarding them. Two different things.

If listening to Rush and company on talk radio (which I do, "know thy enemy", lol!) were an indicator, the Republican Party is a monolith without any diverging views. But I know that's not the case, because I personally know several Republicans who hold a wide range of views... from being pro-choice to very pro-enviornment. They still consider themselves Republicans. The Leadership of the Republican Party, again, is a bit of a different beast. Apples and oranges.

He needs to stay in France if that is his opinion. What a total fool. I believe Mark Twain said it best when he said:

I won't be seeing anymore Johnny Depp movies. No way am I putting one more red cent in that scumbag's pocket.

pssst. bama, plenty of people actually live in this country, make lots of money from me and you, and don't really give a crap about it other than it allows them to become rich. What are we gonna do with them?... I say we eat them!

kinda late to join the debate, but J Depp was pretty darn good in that movie Pirates wasn't he?

and the poor guy's living in France for goodness sake! Everybody he knows there (from his gardener to his neighbor to his driver to all the other actors) probably thinks the same as he does. i suppose all the French people (including their president) and the all those of the 200 countries that did NOT support American policy towards Iraq must be all stupid too...

i think that the only thing this statement proves is that J Depp can read French...

:D

And here I thought this thread would be about Britney saying we should all trust the President to make the right decision and be faithful to him.

I don't wanna quibble, but Clinton never cut military spending -- when he left, it was only two percent less than at the height of the Cold War.

For proof of the military's strength, see the war in Afghanistan, a country the Soviets couldn't conquer 20 years before. The Clinton military took about a week to win. (it had no new funding; Dubya's budget didn't kick in until late 2002).

"A commander in chief leads the military built by those who came before him. There is little that he or his defense secretary can do to improve the force they have to deploy.

It is all the work of previous administrations. Decision made today shape the force of tomorrow. And when that war (the first Gulf War) ended, the first thing I did was to place a call to California, and say thank you to President Reagan."

--Dick Cheney, August 2000.

It's funny...I thinking about Britney's insightful comments too. (could she not have spit out the gum before the interveiw?) As I was waiting at the airport, i saw britney interviewed on crossfire -- why??? no idea. She was asked about iraq. She had noooooo clue? surprised? not me. Point is, interviewers ask these questions. The celeb's can ignore them, or answer. I prefer they answer.

Remember, Depp's comments came in an interview. It might be a bit different if he spouted off comments a la Michael Moore, or Dixie Chicks.

The media's playing you. They own you.

it's scary to know that John Assmunch has probably never pondered the lessons of the Alien and Sedition acts, and the battle fought over them 200 years ago.

Don't bet on it, Friendly.

Ashcroft pondred it and considers that to have been the day when commies started to take over America, and America started to turn toward away from God.

Take it for what it's worth..

-----------------------------------------------
Actor Johnny Depp Disavows Anti-American Quotes

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Denying any anti-American sentiment on his part, actor Johnny Depp said on Thursday that quotes attributed to him as likening the United States to a "dumb puppy" were inaccurate and taken out of context.

"I am an American. I love my country and have great hopes for it," Depp said in a statement released by his Los Angeles-based publicist. "It is for this reason that I speak candidly and sometimes critically about it. I have benefited greatly from the freedom that exists in my country and for this I am eternally grateful."

Depp, currently starring in the swashbuckling film "Pirates of the Caribbean," issued the statement a day after the German news magazine Stern published an interview in which he ridiculed Washington's confrontation with France, where he lives, over the U.S. war in Iraq.

The magazine quoted the actor as saying "America is ... like a dumb puppy that has big teeth that can bite and hurt you, aggressive." He was further quoted as saying he wanted his children to "see America as ... a broken toy" that they should explore, get the feel of, then "get out."

Explaining his comments a day later, Depp he had been using a metaphor that was taken "radically out of context," adding, "There was no anti-American sentiment."

"What I was saying was that, compared to Europe, America is a very young country and we are still growing as a nation," he said. "My deepest apologies to those who were offended, affected, or hurt by this insanely twisted deformation of my words and intent."

His spokeswoman added that the Kentucky-born Depp, 40, lives in the south of France with his family because his wife, actress-singer Vanessa Paradis, is French.
