If the statement doesn't apply to you, don't take it to heart please.

I was referring to the fits I have seen pitched by people over statements by Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, and the Dixie Chicks (not actors, but still entertainers).

BTW, I too was incorrect in thinking that Depp had just spouted off at an awards show or some such, as opposed to these being statements taken from a long interview. The press asks celebrities questions about everything and it is Depp's right to answer such questions honestly. I think it is more over the top to try to demonize him for relatively benign statements made in an interview.

Difference is that Depp is an actor and Falwell is the head of an organization that advocates political issues for its members.

Considering that the title of this thread is not the title of the article in question it seems you're more than just the messenger.

I know I can be a cranky old codger on some points, and this is one of them. History is my first love, the role of religion in it my second love. Law is how I make a living, and business is how I do that. But my love is still history, is still the role we all play in making it happen with our collective beliefs. Because people die over beliefs, it does matter what people believe.

This segment of that discussion is about Johnny Depp, but it's really about freedom of dissent.

Who CARES what Johnny Depp thinks?

He's an American actor with a French wife, living in France. He gave his view, which is not insane, and not terribly inaccurate.

The issue is not his opinion, but his freedom to have it without his patriotism, parentage, and pocketbook being threatened. If there is one thing that separates me from my brethren on the conservative side, it is their relentlessly mean-spirited approach to those who disagree. Their opponents aren't just people who disagree, they're malevolent, evil. The zeal to punish by the right is pathological. Didn't mommy hold you guys enough?

I like Johnny Depp as an actor, but I wouldn't let him park my car.

I wanted to add this postscript

I am generally referring to the things I am seeing on the news as well as the things in this thread. The comments by Depp have drawn heavy coverage, and it's mainly the that unpatriotic bastid variety.

Exactly, what person who actually chooses to use his/her brain really gives a hoot what Depp thinks about politics? I mean, he is probably one of the vast portion of the populace who can't even name one of the Democratic presidential hopefuls.

Personally, I would let him park my car (as long as I could get a picture of him in it) but would not vote for him.

you're thinking of the friends of Dorothy, General Ashcroft. They are parked around back, next to the Log Cabin Republicans.

    Very nice.
I would have posted something like it, but probably not nearly as well.

Depp wouldn't touch my car with a ten foot pole. ;)

I don't exactly see why that is a difference. It's not like he's a dictator. He cannot compell his flock to do his bidding at any time. Falwell can be removed from his position at any time. My point has to do with the fact that everyone is defending Depp for some reason. He made stupid comments, and I'm calling him on it.

    Interesting idea:

Would Depp's comments in a German magazine have made big headlines in America if he had gushed about how great America is?

I don't know either way, but it does raise interesting questions.

He gave his opinion, which, though superficial, were not over the top or even that far off base. There are plenty on this board and in the public eye who have made MUCH more inflammatory comments lately.

I mean, come on, wasn't changing the name of "french fries" in the capitol just a bit childish?

I get the biggest kick out of listening to angry white men rail on conservative talk radio nonstop. I listen to 950 AM a lot of time in the car to keep my finger on the pulse of guys like Rush, and Kristine Baker, and Hannity, and all the others. The anger is there 24/7.

Oh man, when Johnny Depp or Barbara Streisand or Alec Baldwin says something, conservative talk radio hosts are like a dog with a new chew toy.

I love imagining a huge vein pulsing on Rush's forehead with SCANNERS-like dimensions as he contemplates Hillary Clinton as president. Take cover! It's gonna blow!

No way, there is no press angle for it. For comments in foreign publications to make it over here, they have to be inflammatory, "anti-American," or laced with tales of drug use and group sex. :D

Would you say the same for a Republican making racist comments? It's not about free speech, I completely acknowledge his right to say whatever he wishes. I am simply criticizing his comments and calling him stupid.

I think you reading way to much into my psychological profile by this thread. Maybe you should read up on the post Achebe made that got him kicked out. That was the most mean-spirited post I have read in here, ecplising even the efforts of TJ and texxx.

I think the problem here is you guys agree with him, or like him because he is a liberal. Come on, what's wrong with criticizing someone on your own side? I hate Bill O'Reilly and don't hesitate to make fun of him.

I definitely see what you're saying. But I think Jerry Falwell carries a bit more political clout than Johnny Depp. But that's not the issue...

I'm not defending Depp (though I agree with some of his thoughts). I'm defending his right to say whatever he wants. He has the right to speak out against American policy and you have the right to blast him for it.

If you don't like something, say something! I may not like what you say, but I'll fight to the death to defend it.
