The company releasing new run movies that you don't have to go see in an expensive theater whilst paying for parking? Yeah, it's hurting theaters now.

You can't Netflix and chill in a theatre.

I'm not talking about the streaming service. The DVD side is what killed Blockbuster.

Quality, maybe. But the prices aren't that out of whack. Assuming 3% annual inflation, $7 back in 2002 is worth about $11 today.

And all of those movies looked like crap and the attendance reflected that. Why is this a surprise?

Ever seen a preview and think "God who greenlighted that crap looks terrible!?" And then lo and behold it tanks and the movie people are somehow shocked? Joe Shmoe doesn't have to be a movie critic to know what is cinematic garbage. It's almost always obvious.

I was shocked that Ben-Hur reboot failed. This Lord of the Flies reboot is going to kick off an entire cinematic universe though, I can feel it.

Hollywood is in desperate need of some good writing. Everything is a generic, recycled, churned up turd. Hell, with the Deathnote of movie (netflix though), they already had some writing in there. They couldn't help turn it into some highschool flick though.

Actually, inflation grew at 2.05% over the past 15 years, which would put a ticket at $9.63...

I grew up going to the movies a couple of times a week, usually a drive-in, with the indoor theaters on the weekend. Dad was a movie junkie, worked hard, and relaxed at the drive-in, him in the front with Mom, with my sister and I in the backseat (and this was often during the week!). We'd play at the playground before the cartoons that opened the bill started, eat the great popcorn Mom made at home before we went, and pass out after the first feature. I suspect that us passing out was a big attraction.

This was before daylight savings time, which pretty much destroyed the drive-ins in this country. Technology would have eventually, but it was daylight savings time that ruined the best place for a high school kid to get busy with his girlfriend. Sure, we have a great surround system in our living room, with a beautiful screen, Google Fiber for great streaming, etc., but nothing beats going to a theater with great projection, screen, and sound, having the lights dim, and the magic begin. The public has more options, a lot more, but it's quality that gets people buying tickets. Bring the quality, and they will come.

Having fully functioning cineplexes in emerging and even undeveloped markets will keep sequels going, comic book characters may have supplanted religious figures as cross cultural icons. Also several markets will presumably never be fully comfortable with romantic comedies or anything with excessive gender parity or sexuality, and independent films may have less appeal than their own local or regional product.

Its all the sequels and people being unoriginal.

I tell you what though, writers here in LA have a smile because we try to create these original films but can't breakthrough because the studios were all wrapped up in creating sequels because they were often times safer than going with an original IP. This summer was a nice wake up call. Studios are going to be looking for more original content.

Marvel continues to deliver the goods with their movies, and they are being rewarded.

An ugly side effect of their success has been every studio thinking they can do the same thing. Just release their own mediocre, or outright bad movie and build a franchise around it. Just a lot of crap this summer, and very little in the way or originality.

I don't like going to theaters. Why do I want to pay $15 to be distracted by the other guests when I can happily watch it later at home?

Cord cutting means more movie options in house.

We have shorter and shorter attention spans.

80s nostalgia and copious remakes are all they can offer.

Movies suck now. They all suck. Its all comic book **** and sequel fluff and it had been for years.

F***ing Ben Franklin... And it's been proven multiple times it saves zero energy, which was why it was "kept in place" years after Farmers no longer needed it. The sad part is that Morning people screw night people, over & over & over...
