so the current cast of counters are:

    3 anglos (main character)
    2 asians

    how would you change this?

I totally understand the overseas sales attraction. however, people in asia don't play Blackjack, they like Baccarat. trust me, i was in macau .

also do you change the girl? drop bosworth for who? lucy lu?

    I am not Asian
so I don't know much about her sellout status etc
I like the book and took it at face value [I read it for a class]
I would have to check out Woman Warrior

Selling books and Selling a movie are two seperate things
When I said do it with a All white cast I mean rewriting it
into something like. . . Ya Ya Sisterhood or something

I never said Chinese or ANY culture for that matter CANNOT be successfully
sold via movies / books/ etc
It is just not as prevalent/easy/etc

That doesn't make him an authority on the acceptability of whitewashing a story, even his own. It is for the audience to decide.

    sorry juan,
I don't know what movie making class you took, but the audience DOES NOT decide the movie. its called writers/directors/producers/actors

i'm not saying you theory is wrong. I mean, I would have totally changed Hellraiser 3 cause I felt they didn't cast enough hispanics.

TOtally. I was at the casino in the Hotel Lisboa and they had ONE blackjack table, everything else was baccarat or some unidentifiable game involving chinese characters.

    you mean the hooker racetrack?

yeah I couldn't go five feet without being winked at or otherwise accosted.

SOme of them were pretty hot, I was tempted to go spitzer on them, but I was suffering from dyssentery at the time so any such liason would have been....messy.

Maybe they're basing it on the documentaries. Semyon Dukach, Katie Lilienkamp, and Andy Bloch are the former MIT students who appear in both the BBC and History Channel productions.

It is capitalism at work. This will likely reduce cultural variety of our society and also reduce chances for the minority. But I don't find that this is a bad thing. If you don't like it, you can either move out of this country or you can change it to make all cultural industries regulated by the government.

You can always vote by your wallet but obviously as a minority, you will only have a minor effect.

There are perfectly fine Asian movies to watch.

Hollywood isn't at the center of the world.

    ::gasp::

When I heard that they were making a movie about this book I was wondering if they would use white actors to play the parts of the MIT students. Especially since they made it known at the beginning that they purposely didn't use white students because they would be more obvious for counting.

It's really not surprising though. There is a larger demographic of white movie watchers in America so having a white cast would appeal more to them. It's all about money.

There were two teams the Amphibians and Reptiles. The Reptiles were led by Jeff Ma. The Amphibians were led by Semyan Dukach and consisted of 3 anglos (2 males and 1 female) as the main players.

The movie is officially based on Bringing Down The House by Ben Mezrich who based it on the Reptiles. However Mezrich also authored an earlier book called Busting Vegas based on the Amphibians. Both are fictional works.

Here's an interview with Semyan Dukach:

yeah its very deceiving when people say Macau is the 'Las Vegas' of the east,
cause the games are completely different.

Even the roulette was different, different rules etc. the gamblers themselves were different too. no yelling and screaming etc and drinking either.

    different mindset of gambling.

Considering Macau has passed Vegas in revenue perhaps las Vegas is the Macau of the West.

    nah.
Las Vegas is still the best for having a good time.

the Asian gamblers in Asia are worse addicts than those here. Think about it. Have you been to the high roller sections of a vegas hotel? its all foreign Asians playing baccarat .

its also more of serious thing over there. no cheering or cursing at all. it was so quiet. if people start losing they just leave. if people win, they don't say anything.

plus have you check out the odds on the games? they are TERRIBLE. even the only craps table i found at macau (at the wynn) they changed the bets on even the hardways!

oh. also the nicest casinos in macau are the ones made by the VEGAS PEOPLE. Wynn, Sands, Venetian. I went to Lisboa and Starworld. they both suck.
