The Rockets start off at unlucky 13. http://espn.go.com/nba/hollinger/powerrankings Smear some more chicken blood on those voodoo dolls, CH.
What is Hollinger doing Power Rankings for? Doesn't he work in the Grizzlies front office? Does he have anything better to do? His team is 6-5
meh... I guess that's about correct as of right now. Just not sure what Toronto is doing so right now to earn a spot up that might. Their defensive production must be whats pushing them up, and the fact that veteran teams like the Nets, Grizz, & Knicks have been so bad early in the season. The silver lining here for the Rockets fans is that despite really not playing well at all so far this season, they have to talent to grind out a record like this. That's a good sign.
I think Hollinger's is strictly mathematically based, so as long as ESPN has the formula, Hollinger doesn't personally have to do anything to come up with the ratings.
Its just a formula he came up with when working with ESPN that they still run. Its basically an overall formula based on PER among others. Its a ranking based on overall efficiency and value statistics. Not really the end all be all, but it basically is a good measurement of how well your team has been playing DESPITE wins and losses. So the fact that the Rockets are 7-4 despite ranking middle of the pack (and normally would be low considering so many teams are playing bad) is a good thing. basically the Rockets are playing mehhh basketball and still winning games.
They were ranked at #10 yesterday... it's still too early in the season for the sample size to mean much.
I think we are doing quite well based on the fact that we are still trying to mesh and figure out rotations with a disgruntled teammate....
These rankings don't mean crap! You are what your record says you are, and once you get into the playoffs it doesn't matter if you went 82-0 during the regular season! In the playoffs whoever gets 12wins gets the parade, it's that simple. ....... ....... .......
No, I looked at Hollinger's power rankings yesterday and the Rockets were at #10. It changed just based on yesterday's games (the Rockets didn't play).
16 wins.. But totally agree. Season records and highlights don't define champions.. The pressure in the playoffs do.
It's a ranking based primarily on 1) point differential in games and 2) strength of schedule. The Rockets have not yet had many blowout wins and the opponents they've faced have not had a very good record overall. So, it's not surprising that they are ranked 13th. In fact, Basketball-Reference's similar system ("SRS," Simple Rating System) also has Houston 13th. http://www.basketball-reference.com/leagues/NBA_2014.html Obviously the team has to play better than this to be a true contender. However, the good thing is that the team ought to play better than this by the end of the season (or probably much sooner than this, like next month) as the team gets familiar with each other and the team figures out a more efficient rotation (the Twin Tower lineup is a negative on the point differential, for example).

Pacers aren't #1 or 2. MIN is ahead of IND with a 6-4 record. Interesting And that's just the top 3 slots
