Edit. Van Gundy did not take the Rockets past the first round of the playoffs.

I was going to say OMR was such a visionary for calling out tank before all of us saw it coming. But now you seem to be a different emotional trajectory than everybody us. Do you work on the wall street or something?

Frankly I can't think of a worse idea than to bring back Jeff Van Gundy.

I honestly believe we are an athletic defending two way SF and legit top 10-15 center from being a contender. Constructed now, we can probably win 45 games now add both those pieces and you have 10 more wins easy. A 55 win team in today's WC is a contender. Now would we be favorites, NO, but we would be in the mix.

Pg - Two starting caliber guards
Sg - Underrated, scoring two guard
Sf - Strong defender but little to no offense
Pf - Strong offensive player but little to no defense
    C - BIG TIME Weakness

You plug in an above average center and all-star SF...you have yourself a contender.

Completely agree, my word, that was painful. I will never forgive him for the parade of Ole Knicks, the horrible press conferences, and his incredible inflexibility. At times his teams were near unwatchable.

One has to be realistic,no one likes to rebuild. Unless DM gets very lucky,we aren't likely to get much better quickly. Rebuilding doesn't necessarily mean starting from scratch, but some of our assets will have to be given up in trades for picks/players. The long term goal is more important than ending up as either a 1st round exit team,or just missing the playoffs. Yao is my favorite Rocket, but it's highly unlikely for him to make a successful comeback.

Probably a 2nd round exit or a first tough out.
Lakers, Dallas, Jazz and SA. They are the best. Without a star, it's hard to beat them in a 7 game series.

You are technically correct in all of the above, but missing something. You are assuming that our only targets are young superstar who are already out there. Of course none of those are available. What you are missing is that the other route we can take is trading up in the draft for a potential superstar.

By continuing to win, other teams will value our players more. What if Sacromento gets the 5th pick again this year, and is tired of building through youth since they are already full of them and still cannot win. What if they think a veteran like Scola, a 20-10 guy on a 50 win team, is the piece that will turn them around. This is how we will find our next superstar, through the draft, but not by tanking.

The difference is if we tank and get a good pick, what if there is no potential superstar in that draft? How many years do we have to tank to wait for one to fall in our laps? We would have to tear down all the talent we have built up the past few years, just for a SHOT with one draft pick, since we would have no idea who is available. Then, even if we do get our guy, we would need years to build the talent back up. How many drafts have the Kings, Wizards, Timberwolves, Clippers etc etc gone though? By winning, we can bide our time, and go for the superstar when he comes along on our own terms. Oh, and field a team that we can be proud of in the meantime.

I disagree. While he would love to have a superstar caliber player (and may yet get one... who knows?), the team that's playing now is the kind of team that thrives using his system, and they will get better at it as the season goes on, a trade or not. In my opinion. Lee will continue to learn the system and has been showing us lately why we got him. Lowry has been nothing short of amazing. Miller has been solid and has really come on after being slowed by injury early. Hill continues to develop and has shown enough flashes of promise to get excited when thinking about his future. Martin has been on an offensive juggernaut and his defense has improved (still is awful, but it has improved). Chuck has stepped up big time this season, playing terrific defense and finally finding a FT stoke after all these years. Battier is clearly healthier than he was last year and has been solid. Scola is a rock.

This is going to be a fun team to watch. They'll have some ups and downs, and sure, they don't have that superstar piece that makes them a contender, but if they continue to buy into Adelman's system amd improve their defense, they cannot be ignored by the league, in my opinion. And this is without AB, who's due any game now and will make a huge difference (coming off the bench, I hope), and without Williams, who may end up being one of the steals of the season when the wheeling and dealing league wide this year is looked back on and analyzed.

And Chase has sucked. You have to take the bad with the good. I don't think Adelman is going anywhere.

    here is the list
    http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?page=FreeAgents-11-12

players that would fit in as Rockets

    Unristricted:
    Kedrick Perkins
    Tyson Chandler
    Nene
    Carl Landry
    Kyrylo Fesenko

    RESTRICTED:
    Aaron Brooks
    Marc Gasol
    Wilson Chandler
    Jeff Green

Let our FA walk Shane, Chuck, Yao, Jared.....and sign a couple of these guys

    Next Years Potential Line-Up
    Brooks/Lowry/Smith
    Martin/Lee
    Chandler/Williams/Budinger
    Scola/Landry/Patterson
    Perkins/Miller/Hill

-Brooks will be matched unless its outragous
-Perkins is from the area and is a defensive player that we need (instead of a 6'5" C we can get a 7' C)
-Landry loves us and we love Landry (said he would come here)
-Wilson Chandler can be our Melo he is restricted so we would have to match, but this kid has the talent to be a franchise player

If they keep playing poorly he might become available. If the Magic's front office doesn't do something to change that situation, they are going to fall out of contention. Seems like their solution to keep them competitive is always to bring in some washed up volume shooter. Dwight Howard must realize this.

Though I like your proposed roster, any 2-3 of those players will not make us the contender that everyone seems to require us to be next year (short term). I doubt Perkins ever leaves BOS unless they break up the entire team. Chandler will be a focal point to DEN after the Melo trade.

I don't think that's necessarily true. Look at Amare, for instance. He joined the Knicks with very little else there. He wasn't looking to play with other stars; he probably was looking for the glitz and glamour. But we have nice attributes (no harsh winter, no terrible contracts, no income tax). Just have to find the right "kind" of star. Maybe a hometown guy, something along those lines.

I do. Unfortunately, that one player is Hakeem Olajuwon.

-With the aging core in BOS i wouldnt be suprised if they blow it up if they dont win this year (Doc even stated one more year) and if Perkins dosent come then you have other C's like Nene or Tyson Chandler that could join the rockets.

-As far as Wilson Chandler if he does get traded to DEN that still doesn't change the fact that he will be an restricted free agent.

I'd like to see a defensive big like Tyson Chandler. He wouldn't be egregiously expensive and would make up for Scola's defensive liabilities. Bottom line is that we need size at the C. The difference between having a legit 7 footer who can defend and not having one is huge. Just watch how Duncan, even at his age, is able to completely erase a ton of easy baskets with his presence down low. At this point, Duncan's defense is the most important aspect of his game and the reason he is still the most important player on the Spurs.

We need an upgrade at SF too. Especially if we pick up a defensive C. Battier's offense wasn't needed if Yao would be in, but now we need a SF that can score as well as defend. I'm not sure Iggy would be enough to contend now. But I'd be happy to get him, of course.

Make no mistake about it Cuban will make it difficult to get Chandler. Expect the bidding to start at least 10 mil plus per year.
