Its pretty amazing how many people just believe what they hear from friends... Yesterday almost a whole day after this beheading got publisized, some kid reads it on the internet and starts talking about it during lunch(with prom and all coming, i thought i would rather not start a heated debate), but the kid started saying that the "IRAQIS" did this, and then other kids started getting pissed off on how they took revenge for making some prisoners get down into sexual positions... towards the end of the day I had some fool come upto me and ask me if I heard of the Iraqi government ordering the beheading of all americans there.... i was shocked, i flipped out and told him that this was the work of TERRORISTs, not Iraqi government or their civilians... its amazing how teachers never bring up such topics except for in a few classes... these are the types of things our youth need to be enlightened about...

2 or 3 days after 9/11 I stopped by the Islamic Society of Greater Houston HQ and talked to some of the folks there. You will not meet nicer people.

    Why not?

Do you know what it takes to become a Muslim, not that you're going to?

    Say " I'm a Muslim."

    You're done.

It's the least restrictive of the major religions, in that respect. You are expected to live by certain behavioural and moral codes thereafter, but you can't be kicked out or anything if you don't.

i dunno what the station is in dallas, but i could try and figure out, i still have relatives there.. and in houston i can gaurantee all mosques welcome visitors, even during prayer times... just go on a weekend or call up on one and ask someone that looks like they are important. ;) heck there should be someone there almost 23 hours of the day...

that was 6th grade still understandable, but we are seniors in highschool, most of us considered adults by law... and most going to be independent people in about one month.

i assumed that was the case...but didn't know if there was something special about prayer time that wouldn't be appropriate for me to attend. not interested in offending anyone.

Anybody with half a shred of compassion would be moved by this terrible violence.

People are people, regardless of geography or religion. There will be a few dickheads who rejoice, but most will be disturbed by this senseless violence. Same with the Iraqi prison scandal. Some will rejoice, but most will be disturbed.

In a way, it's kinda uplifting -- it shows that we're not so different after all.

I was in my mid-'30's, and it was 3 or 4 days before my birthday. Damn, I was depressed. Hard to believe it happened so long ago. Doesn't seem that long.

I'm glad to hear Hizbollah condemn the atrocity, whatever their reasons.

MadMax, if I recall correctly, you live a couple of minutes west of Memorial. This mosque is close by. A lot of mosques don't like to talk about stuff that's going on around the world, but this one usually does. I recommend that you go this friday or else after schools are out for the summer, it will get really crowded.

The sermon starts at 1:30. There are several imams at this mosque, so a different one gives a sermon every week.

Stick by one of the entrances/exits so you can move out of the way when the actual prayer starts, or else you'll feel really out of place when everyone stands up and you don't know what's going on.

Hakeem funded a place called the Hakeem Islamic Dawah Center in downtown which is basically a big mosque. The building is incredible (old bank), and the Imam is good. Unfortunately, since I guess not many Muslims live or work downtown, it's really empty on fridays and only a handful of women go there.

Yes, sometimes it may begin a little later, so just sit around and wait for it to start. If I recall correctly, you should try to get there by 1:15, so you can get a parking space in the parking lot, or else you'll have to park on Westview.

Thats when most mosques get crowded... friday afternoons... but if you want to speak one on one with just some local muslims and one or two imams, check the prayer times and stop by right after one

here are the locations of some of the local houston mosques...

and the prayer times...(timing on friday is subject to change always)

they seem to be mostly teens posting, so i dunno about the validity of the info.

With all due respect to MacBeth, don't do this.

If they find out you are not telling the truth, it won't be pleasant.

If you want to go to a mosque, just go. If asked about your religion, just tell them why you're there, nothing wrong with it.

But if you lie, then it's a big deal.

BTW, it doesn't matter what the "major" mosques say. Each mosque is individual, have a different sermon, so it's possible you''l hear one thing from he major ones but every other mosque will say something else.

However, it's important that you agree with the Imam in your mosque, that way you trust him and go by what he says regardless of other Imams. However, when you are restricted (not too many mosques in your area), then you need to keep an open mind and keep track of an Imam whom you agree with.

Did they compromise the "condemnation" by complaining that Berg's murder was distracting from the negative attention being heaped on the US for the abuses in the Iraqi deterntion centers?

Were these brief lines the full statement... or is there more?
