Clearly, we need a poster on the ground in Iraq, and I am trying to rectify that ASAP. My first valiant attempts met the following obstacles: 1) My fear of injury or death. 2) My job. 3) My lack of money to get to Iraq. 4) The US military's natural suspicion of me as unreliable and weird and unfit, et cetera. So, I have moved quickly to plan B. With a careful mix of hallucinogens, I plan to spend as much time as possible in my unconscious, virtual version of what the real everyday Iraq must be like. So far, I have the following observations. Please note: They are alarming, eye-opening, and in opposition to almost everything posted by our resident military historian (MacBeth) and our resident person in uniform (Treeman): * Iraq is full of women who look just like my ex-girlfriend Ilene, but with an evil creepy laugh and larger breasts. * Iraq has a constant background soundtrack that alternates between the orchestral music of Alfred Schnitke, "Break on Through to the Other Side" by the Doors, and the Revelations-reading version of Madonna's "Justify my Love." yes, I'm sure it is that, and experience I was on the receiving end of some that kind of advice way back when and it's not all that pleasant. When you are a soldier your job is to do your job. The discussion is over. Someone somewhere makes a decision, and you carry out that decision or the whole thing doesn't work. It's gotta be that way, and everyone in it knows it has to be that way. Ain't no committee gotta meet. An order is given, end of story. It is acted upon and everyone does what they are supposed to do. I can understand those who want to argue, maybe think it does some good, but soldiers aren't making these decisions - they are carrying them out. And his truth is not going to be the same as our truth no matter how much we try. He's in it, even if he's not there. War is never so distant to those who serve as to those who watch from the living room.
