Those shots are easier to make when the ball and players are moving. They're harder to make when you stand in one spot the entire game and watch other players hold the ball.
If you don't prove you can hit outside shots, teams collapse in the lane and shut you down when you try to drive. The spurs did it to the Hornets in game 7. You must have balance. The spurs have penetrators (Parker and Ginobli), but they also have goot outside shooters that can punish you for collapsing on the penetrators.
