I need to know how many great players have been picked at 14 so I can answer all of the threads asking if I prefer lottery or public execution

by limiting your position to 14 you're not getting the full story. 12-16 sounds more like the right window.

Where's the logic in that? If you had the 14th pick, you had the opportunity to draft a star player selected any slot afterwards as well. In fact, you should also include undrafted stars.

My point is that players around that slot are usually of the same caliber in the draft. You can owe at least 2 shifting positions due to team preference and need---by looking at which players were selected at 14 you're putting yourself into the mindset and specifics of the team that chose that player due to respective biases, needs and other reasons outside of that player's ability to perform. Going over 2-3 slots on either end would be too much though (unless you're Cleveland and draft Bennet style). In summary, to account for that variation you have to broaden the slot to include players of "14th pick worth" caliber--not the 14th pick itself.

Ex: Kobe could was picked at 13. I could see him going as low as 15 maybe. He was a 14th pick type of player in the draft.

We will draft another Markus Morris, PPat, T Jones, Jeremy Lamb calibre player.

I'd rather watch Scola, Lowry and Hayes battle every day and get that 14th pick.

Not Harden, Dwight and a bunch of soft role players (except Beverley, although he's just average at best) lead us to the 14th pick.

Well, for the 14th pick in (mostly) weak drafts, they have all panned out.

$6-8m contracts for MM, PP and Lamb. Jones would have gotten that if he had not regresed this year.

That's all you can really expect for the 14th pick. Rotation role players.

But Kwahi was the big miss.

    Aren't we currently pick 12?

If we miss playoffs then we probably pick there.

Another thread that will end up debating why Morey should be fired because he didn't draft Kawhi Leonard.

This. A late lottery pick is not expected to produce a star player. Within the spectrum of realistic outcomes, you are hoping to get a Patrick Patterson-level rotation piece on a winning team. Marcus Morris and (a little later) Jeremy Lamb have developed into those. D-Mo (before the injuries) was that level or better. Terrence Jones was around that level until he inexplicably fell off the map (whether due to injury or just lack of defensive focus).

Did I think (even at the time) that Morey screwed up not taking Kawhi over Morris? Hell, yes! But that mistake doesn't negate that the Rockets' late lotto/mid-first round picks (other than Royce White) have largely been up to par with what should be realistically expected of picks in that range.

It's not the pick that matters, it's the person picking who sucks.
