The Devil in the White City This intertwined the story of the Chicago World's Fair and (supposedly) American's first serial killer.
I love reading historical fiction. Gives you a good idea of how it might of felt in that era. I would have to agree with mateo - "The Killer Angels" by Michael Shaara is one of the best novels I have ever read. In fact, the line in my signature is a direct quote from that book, referring to the first time the confederate troops have ever had to retreat en masse, and sight of Robert E. Lee stops them in their tracks. Some other books by Michael Shaara's son, Jeff are also excellent - Gods and Generals (prequel to Killer Angels) and "Gone for Soldiers" which is about the Mexican American War" Some other really good examples:- "Pompeii" by Robert Harris "Los Alamos" by Joseph Kanon I will have to save this thread - it has given me some good ideas so far.
Davo, I recently read Pompeii by Robert Harris. Man that part about the slave being fed to the ancient eels with earrings and then later the owner having one for dinner will haunt me forever.
Orson Scott Card wrote an historical fiction about Columbus and his journey to America that I really loved. It doesn't seem like quite the same thing as most the books being posted in this thread, though.
I didn't think of this earlier, but a great read is Dont Stop the Carnival by Herman Wouk. Its a stunningly accurate description of life in the Virgin Islands, although its fiction.
I am currently reading "Piece of Cake" by Derek Robinson. It's a fictional account of an RAF fighter squadron during World War II. Can anyone recommend a good book club?
