Since the Chinese put the surname first, would Yao M. be more appropriate than M. Yao?

You meant Ichiro has his first name, eh, given name on his jersey?! That's unusal! His last name, or family name is Suzuki!!! Like in China, Japanese put family names first. But Yao has Yao (family name) on his back, like everyone else.

Yeah, I think Yao M. is more appropriate. I meant, come on, this kind of things are not uncommon. Journalistically there should be some conventions out there. But I know it's not Y. Ming!!!

I don't think Yao Ming cares that much about it although it does bother me when I hear him referred to as "Mr. Ming".

I propose in an effort to satisfy a few interest groups we refer to him as "Senor Yao-san". ;)

Just curious but is Wang Zhi Zhi referred to as "W. ZhiZhi"? I think I saw Yi Jianlan listed as "Y. Jianlan".

    WTF are u talkin about?

Ichiro and Yao is the same

Ichiro and Yao are both (family name)

Suzuki is Ichiro's first name, as Ming is Yao's first name (given name)

Suzuki is his family name. His father's name is Nobuyuki Suzuki. Ichiro in Japanese literally means "first son".
    From the Wikipedia:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ichiro_Suzuki

"It was during the 1994 season that he began to use his given name, "Ichiro" instead of his family name, "Suzuki" on the back of his uniform. Suzuki is the second most common family name in Japan, and his manager introduced the idea as a publicity stunt to help create a new image for what had been a relatively weak team, as well as a way to distinguish their rising star. Initially, Ichiro disliked the practice and was embarrassed by it; however, "Ichiro" was a household name by the end of the season and he was flooded with endorsement offers."

to clarify use the term sir name or family name instead of last name. Yao's family name or sir name is Yao... We get it.
