Great post, I was just pointing out some of my personal favorites. I have the Beastie Boy's first album licensed to Ill and have ALL of LL's albums but Beastie Boy's Licensed To Ill came out in 86' not too far from the 90's, also "Radio" was released in 85' before going plat also not too far from the 90's. I don't think Gangsta Rap killed Hip Hop. NWA was legendary and they were hardcore but they didn't wear grills or sagged there pants so you can see their asses. Master P's 2nd album "Mama's Bad Boy" Track list: 1. "Shoot 'Em Up" 2. "Psycho Rhymes" 3. "Bloody Murder" 4. "***** a B*tch Cuz I'm Paid" 5. "Eyes of a Killer" 6. "I'm Going Big Time" 7. "Mama's Bad Boy" 8. "Ooh *****" 9. "Watch Your A**" 10. "Premeditated Murder" 11. "Dope, Pu**y and Money" 12. "Rich and Dangerous (T.R.U.)" 13. "Trust No Body" (featuring E-A-Ski) 14. "Shouts" Def. agree he made Hip Hop into a joke.
Contrary to what everyone has been saying, I thought Master P's "Mr. Ice Cream Man" and "Ghetto D" albums were bangin (minus any Silkk the Shocker). Do they rap about the most intellectual and relevant topics? No. But if something is catchy and has got a good beat, the song is worth a shot.
It doesn't help your experience if your entering with a negative attitude. If your going to go to a Hip Hop show and expect to be treated with lovingly sayings and no curse words than your entering the wrong place. KRS-1 lives Hip Hop, he's literally based his whole career trying to make Hip Hop legendary. Sure he promotes graffiti but do you think if people stop writing on the walls of Brooklyn, it'll make it less dangerous? (I'm from Brooklyn btw). I'm sorry you didn't enjoy the show because I would've loved to go, next time try going with an open mind.
Again MM, I just put up some of my personal fave's. Quest is awesome. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/j80w4d9U2Fs&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/j80w4d9U2Fs&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> Just for you
As good a place as any to plug an album I've been jamming on for a few days. "No More Heroes" by Solillaquists of Sound is fantastic. A great mix of old and new school sounds and influences from electronica, soul, and dance. http://www.last.fm/music/+noredirect/Solillaquists+of+Sound
I expect such responses. I mean, Ghetto D only sold 10 million copies. To each his own. My guess is that a majority here would also hate on 2Pac, Biggie, Jigga, Method Man, Z-ro, Ghostface...to name a few "hip-hop" artists. They probably don't qualify as "hip-hop" because they arent Common, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, and so on and so forth. I ain't mad though. Asking "is hip hop dead?" is like asking "what is the meaning of life?" Seriously if there's anyone is to blame, it's that damn dallas boogie garbage.
I would put "2Pac, Biggie, Jigga, Method Man, Z-ro, Ghostface" in the same category as "Common, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, and so on." Can't say the same for Master P. Oh, and Dallas sucks.
Really? The first group are clearly gangsta rappers and the second are clearly not. Master P, would never claim to be a good lyricists. Honestly, ask him...I doubt he would lie to you. He was telling ghetto stories. He's a great businessman somehow he managed to push his albums (without a distribution deal) all over the country. People were buying it up just for the sake of buying "underground music" (the same way they do now).
I see alot of great artists on this blog and great blog but most were 90's artists in which in my mind is the best era with MC's like Arrested Development, Big L, Heltah Skeltah, Das EFX, MOP, and Leaders of the New School. Not the whole list just most of the rest where already named. But it's hard to look and find real hip-hop now days since its been warped into a radio mind control and b****es screaming for Soulja Boy on BET. That aint rap, hip-hop, music. Real rappers that are still doing there thing are rappers like Z-Ro, Trae, Eminem in which Relaspe is crazy good, Meth & Red, Old Kanye, Luda, The Game, and even rappers like Maino. I would put Jay-Z but to me Jay-Z is a cake. I mean he owns Def Jam and he gave no promotion for the Blackout 2 which was one of the greatest albums of the year, yet when it comes to his album I couldn't turn on the tv without seeing a commercial. **** that bro, I say I'm going to keep Dead Prez words true and, "Turn off the Radio. Turn off that Bull****."
I'm not buying their CDs or anything, but I am familiar with their music. I was a DJ, it was my job to play the music people wanted to hear. BEP and Lady Gaga are really more pop/dance. Both have been nominated for Grammy's. BEP has won. What was your point again?
Oh! They've won Grammy's! Thank God. For a minute there I thought you were going to not give a good reason to listen to a band.
Hip Hop, and music for that matter, dies every time someone tries to tell someone their particular taste in music blows. Listen to what you like. There will never be an artist/band that will appeal to everyone. It might be cool to hate on platinum mainstream artists or to only listen to underground artists, but music is a personal thing and taste is very subjective. Respect what other people choose to listen to.
