I indicated my choices in bold.

    1998: Nowitzki (9th pick)
    1999: Kirilenko (24th pick)
2000: Redd (43rd pick) (arguably Kenyon Martin, but I don't think he is much more valuable than Redd)
    2001: Gasol (3rd pick)
    2002: Yao Ming (1st pick)
    2003: Lebron James (1st pick)

    What would be your choices?

Im sorry but this thread is kinda pointless. The only thing different the rockets should have done each one of those years is not draft Nachbar. Even then he was supposed to be decent. So nobody can predict the future so theres no point in dwelling in the past.

1998: Coin flip between Dirk Nowitski (9th pick) and Paul Pierce (10th pick)

1999: Coin flip between Elton Brand (1st pick) and Steve Francis (2nd pick)

2000: Kenyon Martin (1st pick) to me Redd is just a scorer.

    2001: Pau Gasol (3rd pick)

    2002: Yao Ming (1st pick)

    2003: Lebron James (1st pick)

So you think Kenny Thomas is a better player than Kirilenko?

Anyway, nobody forced you to respond to this thread, so let those of us who wish to dwell in the past do so...

I'm just going to look at the Rockets potential picks from those years.
It's always unfair to do this, since (1) hindsight is 20/20, (2) many players' futures depend on the enviroment and system they are brought into (if Richard Jefferson were a Warrior, no way is he a near-max player), and (3) it's silly but needs are important. If you have a stud at a given position (especially point or center), why bring in another? Is filling a hole or grabbing the best available guy more important to winning? [for the record though, Portland was still dumb for not grabbing Jordan and either trading him or trying to convert Drexler to be a 3].

    2003 - no pick
    ---------

    2002
    1. Yao Ming Shanghai Sharks-China Houston
-->Tons of critics second guessed this pick, but how's Can't Miss Williams now?
    15. Trade down for Tayshaun Prince or a future first
    ----------------------------

    2001
    ---------
I still find it hard to second guess the EG trade, if only because he really was that good on the court. At the same time, his passive play wasn't likely to change. I'm also not a fan of RJ. I'm certain that his miserable showing in the Olytmpics wasn't a fluke and expect him to be exposed as a second tier guy as NJ rebuilds.

    13. Troy Murphy
    18. Zach Randolph
    23. Tony Parker
    -------------------

2000 NBA Draft (As I recall, we were really hurting for size at this point - but that just goes to show how much a higher a stiff can go if they're over 6'10")
    ---------
    9. Jamaal Magloire
    -------------------------

    1999
    ---------
    22. Andrei Kirilenko
    ------------------------------------------

    1998
    ---------
    14. Michael Dickerson
    16. Radislav Nesterovic
    18. Pat Garrity

'99 was such a stong year:

    1. Elton Brand
    2. Steve Francis
    3. Baron Davis
    4. Lamar Odom
    5. Jonathan Bender
    6. Wally Szczerbiak
    7. Richard Hamilton
    8. Andre Miller
    9. Shawn Marion
    10. Jason Terry
    13. Corey Maggette
    16. Ron Artest
    18. James Posey
    22. Kenny Thomas
    23. Devean George
    24. Andrei Kirilenko
    27. Jumaine Jones
    28. Scott Padgett

    I'd still take Francis #1.

are we picking the best players from each draft class? or drafting to put together the best team?

    My team would be..

    1998 - PPierce - SG
    1999 - RArtest - SF
    2000 - KMart - PF / SF
    2001 - PGasol - PF / C
    2002 - Yao - C
    2003 - DWade - PG

I have the most well rounded roster.. I know I didnt pick some of the top players like Dirk or Lebron but I tried to choose a team I think would fit together and play well. Im not sure about Kmart and Artest being on the same team though..

    hehe oh well

I like your list SJC. Only thing I might do differently is MAYBE take Randolph instead of Pau in that 2001 draft. I only say that because, since we have hindsight, if we're going to have Yao, a Yao/Pau frontcourt is too redundant for my taste. A high post presence with a low post presence would be pretty sweet. Add in that lefty bomber on the wings (Redd), a 3pt bigman with range out to Germany (Dirk), a madman on the defensive end and an opportunist on the offensive end (AK), and the high school phenom (Lebron), that's a solid team.

No cuz i have discussed this same topic with people and no matter how worked up you get about it, the fact is that at the time the decisions we made were not bad at all. Emjohn is right, who know if we would have kept Richard Jefferson, he could have turned into what eddie griffin is now. Same goes for AK47, we dont know how well he would do in Houston if we brought him in. So we can sit here and call CD the biggest idiot in Houston for not going with the picks that you said, but truthfully at the time his decisions were good.

nachbar? that's the best you can do..clearly i wouldn't of drafted eddie "depressed pot-head" griffin. Compared to EG, boki looks like a draft genius.
