it wasn't, since they filmed the ending with the kids since like the first couple seasons, since they didn't want the kids to look too old when they were finally ready to wrap it up. this was always the ending. I personally liked the ending, does kinda sucks the mom wasn't more part of the story this season, but the story was ultimately about robyn and ted.
What a dumb ending. This is why I think Modern Family is 1000x better than this show. The final episode sums it up best.
Apples and oranges. You had to know the show to get HIMYM. It rewarded viewers that knew the history. You could watch modern family at any point and not feel lost.
Spoiler I personally enjoyed the ending and was almost expecting it. The show was how I MET your mother and didn't need to include her in that long of the show. They could have included her for only the last part of the show and it still would have been acceptable since again it was all about meeting her.
Spoiler i think people are missing the purpose of the show. The show was told by Ted to his children, and in this, his children already knew their mother had died 6 years ago. although that is a tough situation, it's very reasonable they are pass the point, where they are okay and want their dad to be happy and move on with Robin. That explains why the kids aren't sad and rather excited to see their dad showing interest in another woman finally after probably years of being sad and heartbroken. Their mother wasn't the main focus of the show, but rather a way of telling the story to ask permission from his kids if it was okay for him to go after Robin.
I'm torn on the ending... I kinda wish they would've made Robin and Barney stay together, then had Tracy not die, and have the 3 couples live a long happy life as best friends! But then again, I love what they did with Barney, how he finally feels the void in his life with his daughter... And I guess IF the mother had to die, it's cool that Ted and Robin end up together. Regardless of the ending though, what a great show! Will miss it very much!
I didn't like the ending. . I LOVED IT. Still teary eyed and so happy. FWIW, I didn't cry during 12 years a slave or Braveheart but this ending felt so right.
I was prepared to cry, like a man!! But it didn't get me, came close when it showed the Mother in the hospital. BTW, balled like a baby at the (real) ending of Scrubs!
I thought the finale was overall pretty good. Every member of the gang had a redeeming moment that made watching the show very rewarding. But, I didn't like how little they showed of Barney and Robin's marriage given how the whole season was framed around their wedding. Also, I thought the mother got stiffed. For how much she was kept in the dark until this season, I thought she deserved more screen time. She also seemed perfect for Ted. I know the show was always about Robin and Ted dancing around each other, but I at least wish we got to know the mother more. I loved the episode centered around her because the big reveal has always been about who she was and we finally got to see that. If they could have made that possible, it would've been the perfect ending. I just felt that the relationships post-BarneyxRobin wedding were rushed.
Helluva an ending. What an emotional roller-coaster ride. Spoiler The hate for the ending is justified but remember the audience for his story is the kids. Not us. The kids already knew that the mother passed away and that Ted's story is to build foundation for his move on Robin. Ted meeting the mother is essentially the backstory to the main story (permission and support on his move for Robin). Putting all 9 seasons in context, I absolutely love the show and the message it conveys to us about finding that perfect girl/guy. The universe has its own way of making things works and that the one is trying to make her/his ways towards you. Never give up hope and always have a positive outlook in life. Make everyday legendary, and cherish those memories and times with those you love. Life is short, so let's make the most of it. Some things are meant to happen, others aren't. Remember that everything happens for a reason.❤️
Heck, it helped save broadcast prime time from being buried in reality TV, and finally made something of the Friends model after so many failed tries in the late '90s and early '00s.
Absolutely hated the ending. The whole Ted-Robin angle had been played out long ago. The show wasted the entire final season on Barney & Robin's wedding only to have them divorce three years later which is something I suspected would happen because of Robin's career. But that point, the wheels began to come off. That was as bad an ending as any and I talking about truly horrid endings like Seinfeld, Dexter, St, Elsewhere, Lost and the Sopranos. All this has done is make me cross off any interest in HIMYD. So very disappointing...
I began to enjoy the ending more when I realized Ted and Robin would end up together. Sucks that the mom died but Ted needed to end up with Robin.
