With four games left in this season, the Rockets will begin work Friday on their summer league team and perhaps next season’s roster.

The Rockets will sign NBA Development League forward Alexander Johnson for the remainder of the season and to a non-guaranteed contract for next season, a person with knowledge of the decision said Thursday. The team will release center Hilton Armstrong to make room on the roster.

Johnson, a 6-9, 240 power forward from Florida State, played in 102 NBA games with the Grizzlies and Heat, averaging 4.3 points and 2.7 rebounds. He averaged 23 points and 11.1 rebounds in 22 games with the Sioux Falls Skyforce this season.

Glad to be brining the all important 15th-man-on-the-roster news. :)

I am telling you though, this move means it's a matter of time David Thorpe starts to work for the Rockets.

Thank God Hilton Armstrong has been jettisoned. He was an eyesore on the court if there ever was one.

God those people that post on the chron articles online are so dumb.

"The Rockets are truly in the Dark Ages with no foreseeable hope in the future. Yao Ming, as great a person as he is, is not the answer, and his presence commits the club to an uninteresting style of basketball. Sometimes there is no solution. They'll wait too long to trade Yao to get any value for him. "

    wait thats not all

'I do not know if the Rockets are going anywhere until they get a coach that can coach D and put a premium on it. Even with Yao, and D is what he is all about, the Rockets are at a standstill. Morey is a good GM. I do not think Coach A would be his choice today. They can be VERY good with the right coach. Let's just hope. Get Bob Knight down here as an adviser and let him throw a few granades at a few of these guys and see what happens!"

Hilton Armstrong sure liked his dunks. Cheering afer alley oops and slams was the only time he displayed an active interest in anything.

Rockets maybe coulda got Alexander Johnson in the Battier/Gay trade if they wanted to get demanding :)

I wonder if it is possible to sign Alexander to like a 5 million dollar contract or something with like 1 million guaranteed.

Thus in the offseason use his him as filler in any trades so we don't have to give up a core rotation piece like Scola or Battier.

Say we make some sort of Bosh trade, we have to send out almost 13 million in contracts. Almost assuredly Battier and Jeffries have to be involved to make it work. But if Alexander has an unguaranteed contract he could be included and waived once he gets to Toronto without costing us one of those guys.

Maybe I am crazy, but it just seems odd to add someone to the roster right before the season ends on a non playoff team. I'll have to read up on Larry Coon's faq.
