I didn't see the comment as racist. But I didn't know Indians working at gas stations was a stereotype, either.

I thought everybody was pissed because she made a crappy-ass joke about the most amazing spiritual leader since Jesus Christ.

"First of all, I think you completely misunderstood what I said. I meant it in a complementary way. I mean, you know when people say, 'He's bad', it really means he's good, sort of thing? You know, slang."

    "Use it in a sentence."

"Man, that Michael Jordan is so phony!"

Colin Powell is a great man. He ran a Popeyes in St. Louis right?

Joe Lieberman is a great man. He used to sell potato pancackes and dradles in New York ?

I guess its easier to make fun of some people than others. I think anyone in office especially for a diverse area like New York should be a little more intelligent about their comments.

I thought Trent Lott's comments were silly, and he stepped down from his position for them. These comments are just as bad, yet I don't see many of the people that jumped on him even uttering any negative words against Senator Clinton.

It is a shame if political nonsense has distorted your perceptions to that level.

The fact is that the stereotype does exist. An example can be found in the Simpson's Apu, but it goes back farther as i remember jokes about slurpee machines in thick indian accents.

Further, I submit that her comment was informed by that stereotype. If she had said something about Gandhi working at the local shoe store, that would not have been the same and would not have been as "loaded." I don't think she was being racist, but she was definitely being stupid.

That said, I also find the thread starter to be disingenuous. Additionally, resorting to affected hysterics is worthless. Rice really is a cracker jack school, isn't it? Seems to produce such lightweights. He is not the only one being disingenuous, though, as some from the so-called other side arebeing unfair in this thread and the other.

Why am I being disingenuous, oh enlightened one? I'm so happy that you took time out of your busy and important schedule to inform me of this.

Prove to me how I'm being disingenuous. I can't wait to hear your answer.

I don't know about the "jack" part, but according to my experience there, you are otherwise right on the money. But I'm not sure what university consistently turns out analytical heavyweights from its undergrad programs. Our culture is deadset against it. Blah blah.

Anyway, Hillary has lost many points in my eyes. I can't imagine what she was thinking. I don't know how to compare it to Lott's comments, as that's a very different bit of history.

I do see what rimbaud means about gas stations having convenience stores attached to them in most cases now. For some reason, I automatically pictured a more traditional gas station, which I see as kind of quaint, probably as my grandpa was a mechanic, and probably also because I am automatically more sympathetic to Hillary than someone like Mr. Lott.

My schedule is not that busy.

    bob,

I knew that would get a response from you, which is mostly why I put it in there. Besides, Rice obviously taught you to spell Gandhi wrong in the other thread.

LMAO. No no, I took no classes on Ghandi (sic) while at Rice. We will have to blame the Texas public school system for my spelling of most proper nouns of import. Or we can blame my parents, here at the tail end of the holidays.

Guess which quote is from the ethnic group being insulted and which is a partisan politician:

"I don't think she was, in any way, trying to demean Mahatma Gandhi,... To be generous to her, I would say it was a poor attempt at humor. Perhaps I'm overly sensitive, but I find it offensive when people use stereotypes in that way."

"I am appalled and shocked about Senator Hillary Clinton's tasteless and offensive joke concerning Mahatma Gandhi. He was one of the great leaders of the 20th century. Such a statement demonstrates her insensitivity to others. That she engaged in ethnic stereotyping, particularly against such a great man who was such a revered leader is another indication why Sen. Hillary Clinton owes the American people more than just an apology."

    Ya. Exactly.

That's the kind of joke one should, if at all, only make in a very, very small circle of very, very good friends who know you very well and know that you are not meaning anything bad by it - in other words, those who know you well enough to forgive a bad joke and not think anything of it.

To make it at the occasion where she did it is really stupid.

Rocket River, what would you have thought if she had said...

"Benito Juarez...ah, that's the guy I just saw mowing the lawn over there"

    or

"Martin Luther King...ah, is that the guy who I saw working at Clyde's BBQ yesterday"...

Would you still think "lock it", not worth discussing?

I thought Trent Lott's comments were silly, and he stepped down from his position for them. These comments are just as bad, yet I don't see many of the people that jumped on him even uttering any negative words against Senator Clinton.

    (1) Lott was serious (although we don't know the exact intent in the statement); Clinton was joking.

    (2) Lott had a history of actually supporting that type of thing (fighting against desegregation, etc); Clinton, as far as we know, does not have a history of mocking Indians.

    (3) Lott did not step down from the Senate, but from a leadership role that Clinton doesn't have.

    (4) Lott didn't step down because of his comments. He was forced down because his own party decided it was a liability to have a leader with a questionable past making dumb statements, when race is an issue that they have been on the losing side on in recent history. None of this applies to Clinton.

The only thing similar about the situations is that they were in bad taste and offensive to some.
