    Tasered student a known prankster

    September 20, 2007

VIDEO of police using a Taser gun on a persistent questioner of US senator John Kerry has become an internet and TV sensation, generating fierce debate about free speech and the motives of the student involved — a known prankster who often posts practical jokes online.

University of Florida president Bernie Machen said the incident, in which the student loudly yelled, "Don't Tase me, bro!" was "regretful". He asked for a state probe of campus police actions and placed two officers on leave.

The student, Andrew Meyer, 21, had no comment after he was released on various charges following a night in jail. But details from his online writings and videos raised the question of whether his harangue during the forum was genuine or a stunt.

Meyer has a website featuring several homemade videos.

University police said in a news release officers had been summoned by the forum's sponsors to escort Meyer from the building, though organisers disputed that and said his microphone was cut off after he used a sexually explicit term.

Police said Meyer was stunned because he resisted when officers tried to handcuff him.

His lawyer, Robert Griscti, said it appeared Meyer was shocked after the cuffs were on.

Just before the scuffle started, Meyer asked a woman to tape his exchange with Senator Kerry. One officer said the woman was "there to film him" and that Meyer asked, "Are you taping this? Do you have this? You ready?" before beginning his question.

Meyer refused to leave the microphone after his allotted time, police said.

A college student a "prankster"?? NO KIDDING?? SERRIOUSLY? A 21 YEAR OLD WHO POSTS STUFF ONLINE IN JEST? NO WAY!!

And how much sense does it make to say "he was stunned because he resisited"? So he was stunned that he resisted arrest? what?

I had to read that line a couple of times. I think here "stunned" = tasered.

obviously more lies by "the man". :D

a known prankster? more lies to cover "the man's" wrongful actions.

its obvious this kid did nothing wrong and all the blame goes to everyone else, but him.

    funny, "don't tase me bro!".

in other words, "don't tase me, I'm a white guy!" :D

good thing the officers were not african-american cops otherwise it would create a different view to this case.

How often does that happen? I only think race is brought up when white cops use force on other races. When cops beat on white's it's usually called funny.

Hasn't anyone noticed that he wasn't "tased" but stunned by a stun gun?

It says so in the police's statement in one of the articles. And it says he was "stunned" not tased.

A taser works from 10 feet, a stun gun works from point blank, which he happened to be while held down.

Also, won't taser hurt the one using it if they make contact with the tasee?

The dude put "tase" in everybody's mind by making that famous quote.

I'm sure he was stunned to find out what had really been used on him.

you can "dry stun" with a taser...meaning tase them at point blank.

BUt you bring up a good point. A Taser usually completely incompacitates the subject. When he is stunned, by whatever, he is making clear "ow ow ow" sounds...from the taserings i've seen, people tend to not much such clear sounds. I thought maybe it was a weaker taser, but a stun gun would make sense as well

Or maybe he edited it and added a taser-sound to the video for YouTube audience consumption. This guy's a lunatic John Lucas.

Wow...She's a badass! After seeing that, she's shot right to the top of my list. :D

On the tasing note- a cop friend of mine has the pepper spray and tasing done on his whole academy class on tape- I'll have to see if I can get it digitized and post it.

i liked how they kept asking the dude to "get up! stand up!" and the primary purpose of the taser/stun gun is to incapacitate so that the criminal CANNOT get up. :p
