what has this bbs become when we get made fun of for making premature comments about players we have no idea about? Where's the fun in saying logical stuff or waiting a few games before we pass judgment on rookies? Hope theres a thread later about BJ.
I like how everyone else thinks they exactly knew that Landry would turn out to be this good. Fact is, nobody thought he would be contributing as much as he is right now.
Nobody planned on him contributing this early, but the tenor of many of the posts quoted above is that he doesn't even have the potential to contribue-- that he was a bad pick for #31, that they knew he was worse than the likes of McRoberts. Nobody knew what was going to happen with Carl, that's what's funny about those who were adamant about thinking they knew he would suck. They wrote him off because they never heard of him. A fair minded person would have said "I don't really know what to expect, becuase drafts are a crap shoot" and not "I never heard of the guy, he must suck... OMG FIRE MONEYBALL."
i clicked on this thinking someone made a highlight video of Carl Landry. damn, someone needs to work on that
haha oh man...and this is why whenever i post, as rarely as it is, i try not to be too judgemental too early. I remember going 'huh, who are these ppl?' on draftday, but to go out there and call players that ppl have seen 1 or 2 highlights of and claim our draft was sucky and we're doomed? that's just asking for trouble months down the line when someone revisits the thread... and yea, someone really needs to put together a landry highlight vid, that'd be awesome
Why would you start a thread that attempts to ridicule a dozen or so members. Maybe you are still bitter the Rockets dumped JVG even though it is obvious it was the right decision just like drafting Landry and Brooks was. It is very easy to find fault with any poster with hindsight. But I don't remember you screaming the attributes of Landry early on. I studied the draft for a while with my limited tools (internet). And nowhere was Landry on my Radar. He had some good workouts but nobody was talking about him like he was off the charts. He was just an average prospect to me. Hell when Landry came into camp he looked like a major project. He struglled in preseason games with only glimpses of talent. So it's no wonder there were skeptics. The Rockets themselves were torn between Landry and Glen Baby. Fortunately they made the right decision but many of us didn't know that and we were wrong. P.S. what you had to say about the trade wasn't a resounding yes either.
Because it's funny (and evidentially a number of us agreed). Can we not have some fun even if you don't like it? And yes, the title is intentional. I put it that way because it's funny. Why does one have to say a "resounding yes" to Carl Landry in order to be right? What I said was Landry was an unknown quantity, which was correct-- and which was what the management itself thought and said back then, too. Also, did they end up retaining Chuck or not? I (and many others in the thread) didn't go nuts and overreact and predict certain doom for Landry and declare the drafting of him an idiotic move as some did.
I don't blame the posters for not being confident with Landry though I did not grade them then as I do not know them much. Look at it this way, though Morey picked Landry (I assumed this), I don't think he is very confident Landry will be good as well. That's why Rockets did not gave him a good contract but instead signed him for just one year. That contract has caused Landry and his agent to be angry and frustrated because they felt the contract given to Landry was not consistent with what other drafts got. I hope Landry does not take this too personally but back then, he was clearly upset and I don't blame him if he still remember the way Rockets management treat him.
Well, are you going to start another thread of "Highlights of Aaron Brooks Owning"? Brooks is looking more and more like a 5'10 SG than PG. 5'10 SG is no good. 5'10 PG with speed - has a chance too be good. As for Landry, nobody would expect him could finish around the rim in such a way, not even those who follow his career. The improvement of his vertical for 4" is certainly the key - thank you to the Rockets trainers and their 2+ hours jump rope exercises daily. I know Landry is a perfect compliment in Adelman's offense, which always need a forward to finish around the rim in high %, after his first few regular season games. But Landry had a bad game vs. Utah when Yao was out. So, it is interesting to see how Landry can fare against good teams when Yao is out and opposing teams simply clog the paint - no more dunks and layups. I dont feel embrassed at all for an early judgement falls short. At least I dont do this "I reserve my judgement later" hypocritic gesturing. I put my bet down, I'll take the outcome, win or loss. No problem. As for the OP, you should start learning what's the difference in FG% between contested shots and uncontested shots. That's my advice.
