Gee, I wonder why Wal-Mart ran out of stock so quickly. :)

I just called my local Wal-Mart (Twin City Highway in Port Arthur), and they have 10. I'm going to get one at lunch.

Engadget is saying that not only Wal Mart will have the $100 players:

    http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/01/best-buy-offers-the-toshiba-hd-a2-for-100-too-and-other-hd-dv/

I have stayed far away from the high def movie decision because I wanted to wait for an actual format. But man, players for 100 bucks...

Keep in mind there will be more opportunities. There is no reason to rush out and buy these HD-DVD players now because prices always stay flat or fall. I would expect the price of Blu-ray players to fall in response. Maybe early next year, combo prices will be reasonably priced.

I don't know. Is there a decent combo player that is even close?

I mean, at 100 bucks I wouldn't be losing out much no matter what happens. I have a 720 tv and I was looking to get something to upscale DVDs while I wait the High Def thing out.

But man, even good upscaling DVD players are a 100 bucks.

I can keep primarily to my regular DVDs, buy the occasional HD that I might want to see...it's not too bad a choice.

I don't know. I'm actually seriously considering this now.

Not really. I think only LG has put out combo players, and they retail for $700 IIRC. You could just as easily get a PS3 (or a similarly priced BR player) and a HD DVD player for that price.

Depending on how this holiday season plays out, I'm guessing those players could get a lot cheaper...or they'll become practically useless. If this last-ditch effort on hardware pricing works out for Toshiba, I'm guessing Blu-ray players will definitely drop in price as well just to keep HD DVD from gaining too much momentum, as A_3PO pointed out. Combo players would drop in price as a result, or at least I would hope they would. And actually, since this would probably result in HD DVD gaining back marketshare (and "delaying" the end of the format war), we'd probably get more competition in the combo player department, which could drop prices even further (as I said, I think only LG has put out combo players).

And if things don't work out so well for Toshiba and HD DVD, then there may not be much need to get a combo player 6+ months from now.

Sure enough $100 bucks isn't much of a risk, but unless you are in a hurry, I wouldn't buy. Then again, it's only $100 bucks. For me, it will be next Fall at the soonest when I would consider buying.

also the product is quality, good reviews for performance. i wouldn't pay $ for no-name brand (made that mistake before) no matter how cheap it is.

    here's a good review:

Reading around, it seems the Toshiba player is a good one, though. And like I said, I had already committed to getting something for upscaling this year.

And don't you have one of the high def players of some sort already? Maybe not, I thought I remember you talking about them at some point.
