If we're ignoring studio support(in which Blu-ray has the advantage) and just focusing on technology:

    Blu-ray Advantages:
More storage space - A dual layer Blu-ray disc has 50 GB whereas HD-DVD dual layer discs are 30 GB. This is partly why lossless and uncompressed audio is found on the majority of Blu-ray titles, whereas we see on a minority of HD-DVDs.

    HD-DVD Advantages:
All players are up to spec - Right now, every HD-DVD player has an ethernet connection for downloading firmware upgrades. They also all decode Dolby TrueHD. And they can all handle the picture-in-picture video commentaries that a lot of HD-DVDs feature. This is not the case with Blu-ray players. Soon this should be the norm, but for those folks who bought a 1st or 2nd gen player, they may already be saddled with an outdated model and have to upgrade to a new one to take advantage of the aforementioned features.

seriously there are no big differences besides the size, and I have heard that the people that put Transformers on HD-DVD already maxed out the capacity, making them leave out somethings like Dolby 5.1 or something like that.

HD DVD players have been cheaper than Blu-ray pretty much the whole time, and while they've had a (slight) advantage in standalone player sales (not including the PS3), this hasn't quite led to better movie sales. Blu-ray has had a 2-1 advantage over HD DVD in 2007 IIRC, and the gap can even be seen in some Warner releases like 300 (~250K on Blu-ray vs ~125K on HD DVD IIRC). And this is just in the US...might even be more lopsided elsewhere.

Even though the price gaps may be about the same, maybe people will treat a situation involving $200-$300 HD DVD players and $300-$400 Blu-ray players differently. That's basically what Warner is waiting to see I guess. So far, this hasn't really helped HD DVD at all, but if it can finally make any sort of impact, maybe they'll consider backing HD DVD instead (guessing this would require something like a 2-1 advantage in sales in favor of HD DVD though, or something like that). Otherwise, if things stay roughly the same, they'll see better sales on Blu-ray.

<$200 is a sweet spot for a lot of people and could mark a turning point for HD-DVD.

I think blu-ray will win out in a few years.

The fact that HDTVs are starting to become more affordable plays a huge role in this as well.

Wal-Mart is selling the Toshiba HD-A2 player for 98 bucks starting tomorrow morning(11/2) at 8 AM. If that's not a cheap enough entry price, I don't know what is.

Funny, I had a rep from Wal-Mart tell me they would eventually be a Blu-Ray exclusive store....

Price war will win it though... and if HD-DVDDDVVDD is that cheap, Wal-Mart will give them a good chance at surviving.

The local Wal-Mart stores up here have huge Blu-Ray displays too, FWIW.

Ah ha! It fits with their lack of 1080p screens..

    C-Net review of Toshiba HD-A2

    "no 1080p output"

    :(

    Two words: Phase out ;)

It's on their website and they're also advertising the price in commercials. Trust me, this is legit.

Even if you just use it as an upconverting DVD player, 98 bucks is a bargain for the A2.

Saw that about the HD DVD player, for that price I might pick one up because I'd love to see a few movies in HD while all this crap settles down, I'm a Bluray supporter and hope that Warner picks the BR camp and speeds up the end of HDDVD
