Isn't it illegal to own an unregistered gun? That would mean that everyone who owns an unregistered gun is a criminal.

    lol Touche.

Clarification: As Lou 4 2 implied, not every owner of an unregistered gun purchased it for the sole purpose of engaging in a career of criminal endeavor.

Believe it or not, that was a real question. You could have answered without being an ass.

I am just wondering though, if people have the right intentions, why not register a gun? Why not obtain it legally?

If I were to get a gun, I definitely would obtain it legally. What rational person wouldn't?

So the point is that because there are already a lot of guns, we should keep making them? I don't buy that. Yes, at the beginning, there would be illegal guns around. But when you're not introducing new guns and bullets to the market, they will gradually lose their use. To paraphrase Chris Rock, if bullets cost $5000, people would actually think before they want to kill someone.

Also, both Japan and China were wartorn countries within the past century. While the US hasn't had any internal violence since the civil war. If those countries managed to eradicate guns from society in a short time, I don't see why we cannot.

Eradicating guns would save lives. But I am not for advocating guns just as I am not for advocating prohibition nor the banning of automobiles.

But like alcohol consumption and driving, I am in favor of regulations that protect the public interest at large. You aren't allowed to drink and drive for example even if you are able to do it well. You can't drink before 21, nor can you drive without a license and having taken a test. Car ownership is well documented and if someone uses your car in a crime, the cops will show up at your doorsteps.

Yet people are opposed to all of these regulations for guns despite the greater harm guns do. That makes no sense.

Because there's a long history of gun registration leading to confiscation, that's why.

You're ignoring half of what I wrote.

I ignored it because it seems like you're reaching quite a bit with the statement. Vast, vast majority of Americans don't own guns. Even less carry guns outside. Your statement implies that these people, myself included, are all idiots for not protecting themselves. As well as the idea that these people are all getting shot everyday because gun-totting bandits go around murdering and pillaging from the non-gun owners.

Criminals don't know which homes have guns and which don't. No matter, we're never going to agree. You don't want to own a gun, fine, but you don't have the right to force that choice on others, but you probably know that.

That is only true of paranoid gun nuts.

If the only guns you can afford or have access to are black market unregistered guns, this is what you purchase. For the same reason that "law abiding" registered gun owners do: self/home defense.

I'm guessing the vast majority of bbs members did not grow up in low income households in impoverished areas.

It's a fact that registration leads to confiscation. Paranoia has nothing to do with it.
