Deal jolt for Davis BY GREG LOGAN STAFF CORRESPONDENT October 7, 2005 CHARLESTON, S.C. - Forward Antonio Davis, who was part of the Eddy Curry trade, spent less than 24 hours at the Knicks' training camp before returning to Chicago yesterday to be with his wife while her mother undergoes surgery. It has been rumored the Knicks might release Davis so he can re-sign with the Bulls in 30 days. The NBA has discouraged such side deals, and Knicks president Isiah Thomas and coach Larry Brown offered opposing views on that subject. Thomas said Davis, 37, "is torn" because his wife is from Chicago and wants to remain there, but he has to play for the Knicks to collect the final year of his contract worth $13.9 million. "He really has no choice," Thomas said. "This isn't charity." Brown coached Davis with Indiana and values his experience and leadership, but he said Davis was "devastated" by the trade and should be released if that's his desire. "I don't want to stand in the way if he doesn't feel comfortable," Brown said. "I'd be disappointed, but you don't want somebody who doesn't want to be here." http://www.newsday.com/sports/printedition/ny-spknotes074458679oct07,0,3988661.story?coll=ny-sports-print','51' ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hahahahaha. Oh man. This coming from a guy who was set to pay $14 mil this year to Tim Thomas, continues to pay truckloads of cash to a useless Alan Houston, took on a hopeless Mo Taylor (who will probably receive a fat extension) and gave Jerome James the full midlevel? I think I'm gonna have to disagree with you there Isiah. You're running the second biggest chaity in America after the Red Cross.
Seriously... Isiah was a bad NBA analyst, a bad NBA coach, a bad NBA GM, and a bad CBA owner. Now that he's no longer a player, he really has nothing left to offer pro basketball. He needs to step out of the limelight. He's doing nothing to help the game.
isiah did do a damn good job building that indiana squad. you can say whatever you want about the awful job he's done in NY, but the nucleus of that pacer squad is what HE built. however, concerning this issue...you have to let a guy go who really doesn't want to be there and for legitimate reasons. if zeke is not going to let a guy go because he wants to be close to his sick mother, then that speaks volumes about his character.
isiah was the GM...he made the decisions on roster moves. larry was a hands off guy with personel. he just coached and did a very good job. isiah pulled off the trades for artest and o'neal. there's two all-stars and the nucleus of that team till this day.
You're thinking of Donnie Walsh. He's the older one, and he's white. He's often confused for Isiah. My trick in telling the two is to remember this: Donnie Walsh is one of the most accomplished and highly-regarded NBA personnel heads to have ever run a team. Isiah is the one who is a horrible, horrible GM.
Knicks roster before Thomas PG Eisley, Ward SG Houston, Shandon Anderson SF Van Horn, Weatherspoon PF Othella Harrington, Doleac C Kurt Thomas, Deke and Allan houston got hurt.
Guess what? Isiah is right. NBA is no charity. If you get paid almost 14 million dollars a year for a job and that job requires you to be away from you family for six months, you do it, period.
Acting as a slight improvement over Scott Layden means about thismuch. I mean, James Dolan is going to pay $125-million dollars in 2005-06 for this team, and for what -- 45 wins at best?
