There's more to it than that. Even if she knew (or at least had an idea), the public humiliation of all of this coming out in the open must be very difficult for her. I'll give you an example: Gordon Bethune, former Chairman of Continental Airlines, used to grab every flight attendant he could get his hands on, for years and years. What made his wife finally divorce him was one year the cameras at the Rose Bowl were panning the stands and pointed him out sitting next to some young dish. It was too much for his wife to take and she filed for divorce. As long as his sleeping around wasn't public, she was OK with it. This is a true story. (In fact, a few years later, he shacked up long-term with a 22 year-old that worked in my department). Publicized infidelity, especially the gory stuff that's come up with Clemens, is very humiliating to the spouse.
I have a feeling she will be paid very well after this is done... Also, the wives know what can and does go on and I'm sure the wives aren't clean also. Like you say, once it goes public it's on like Donkey Kong...
A good friend of my brother in law is a top professional hockey player. His wife is aware of the life of a star player. Her directive to him was very clear: "Just don't embarrass me." It's a different world.
