Give me a break. My parents immigrated in the 1970's from Mexico, and I have asked them about racism and they have told me it has never been a problem. And Mexicans continue to immigrate in huge numbers, and they are getting more involved in all aspects of American society. What exactly are you basing this statement on? And what makes you think Americans will get mad at Mexicans for what the Mexican government does? Isn't this something militant Muslims do?
So there is no racism or discrimination or resentment of other cultures where you live? Please tell me the neighborhood, as I would like to move there. I hope you are correct. I usually accuse others of being too cynical, but perhaps that is my fault in this case.
Well, As someone who lives in Austin Texas. I don't see a lot of racism concerning the Mexican community. Fajitas are the best import in the history of the world. Heck, let's annex Mexico...... DD
Huh? Where did I say there was "no" racism or discirimination? You yourslef said "many" people felt resentment, and I think that is flat out wrong. What do you base that statement on?
Where did I say it would "never" happen? Americans barely lashed out after we were attacked on our own soil by militant Muslims. So now you think we will display violence against all brown people (Krugmans phrase) because of what the Mexican government votes in the UN? That is a joke of a statement. He simply ran out of ideas, and his deadline was coming up, so he just filled his column with BS.
You said it was "moronic to suggest that something like this could happen". Sorry if I misunderstood what you meant.
Methinks that Rockbox needs some help in locating Mexico and Canada. RockBox, Mexico is located just south of Texas and has a border that stretches from Texas through New Mexico, Arizona and California. Canada is located just to the north of the continental United states. Mexico is known for good food, great weather and outstanding Tequila. Canada is known for good hockey, friendly people, and beautiful scenery (in the summer that is.). Any more questions? You should just ask if you don't know. DD
Well the word Krugman used was "backlash." I think it is moronic of Krugman to say there is a chance of that happening. And he also suggest that their is a bigger chance for a backlash in a multiethnic country. Isn't it the opposite? Aren't multiethnic countries more likely to be tolerant of other races? If we had no Muslims here, I think the resentment would be a bit higher.
It's sort of like when the whole class gets in trouble with the teacher, no one really does. The Bushies can threaten the whole world if they want, but they are starting to look sort of silly. As Brezinski said this is the lowest prestige the US has had in the world since WW II. Oh well as Caligula and Treeman etc. say "It is ok if the whole world hates us, just as long as they fear us."
I agree with this. Most Americans don't even know what the UN is. For backlash to occur you have to a) know who the UN is, b) Mexico has to vote 'against' the US (probably won't happen), c) people in the US actually have to be aware of the news that this has happened, d) people have to actually CARE that this has happened, e) people have to care ENOUGH about this to want to do something about it, and f) all of the above, plus the person has to be stupid enough to equate the vote with a hispanic person or product and want to inflict some kind of economic or other kind of harm. In short, I think this article is far-fetched and just another excuse to bash Bush.
The world is quick to forgive and forget and to move on...and we will have established a "Do not screw with us" policy. I mean, is Russia still our enemy? Is Germany, and Japan? Nope, people and countries move on to the next topic. Bush just needs to get it over with and attack. DD
Americans are the ones with short term memory...not the world. Mexico still remembers how we took 1/3 of their land with a bloody war and a bargain rate price. They can forgive, but they won't forget. Wasn't Jeb Bush's wife born in Mexico?
It probably depends on reform. If their is democratic reform, countries will move on. Japan is a good example.
Please provide a link to the post in which I stated this, glynch. Or go back to the other thread and answer the questions I asked. Is this all you can do when challenged? Run to another thread and slip in a cheap shot? Getting desperate...
