Amen Drewdog! I'm always stuck behind blue-hairs who write checks... AND WAIT UNTIL THE TOTAL IS CALCULATED before freakin' whippin' it out!!!! If you know you're gonna be a punk and write a check, could you please fill everything out while the checker is scanning the items. Aargh!
actually, I just pay my rent and all other "paper" check needs online. Sure, the bank ends up sending the paper check, but you don't have to physically write it... and that's cool.
no more my friend. Pretty soon... checks will all be digital images (moving funds, instead of paper)...and there wont' be that lag. Watch out for those overdrafts!
I know it probably won't last but how many time do I have to say that it still isn't working there yet? I just wrote a check at Wal-Mart Monday and it still has not went through. I know it won't last but for now it is still going on.
A credit card PIF every month is always much better than a debit card. Instead of me balancing out my checkbook for every couple dollar transaction, I can review my CC bill, ok it, and then pay it. Also I had a high dollar item that was being billed to my CC every month automatically. I went to cancel it and they required two weeks notice. I didn't agree with it as it is prepaid services and wasn't told that up front. They were going to bill my account anyways. Instead of filing a dispute, I simply canceled the credit card and had a new one a week later.
Probably the reason it hasn't gone through is because they haven't submitted it to the bank yet. If they submit it to the bank the same night you write it you might be screwed. I've had my apartment complex take a week to cash my check before, and other times it's gone through a couple of hours after I dropped it off.
While I think its a good idea to pay rent with a check... many places do have debit/credit card machines in their offices to pay rent.
OK, Did some more digging, it is up to the retailers to have them go through instantly. So far HEB does it, Lube Pit Stop and a few others. By the way, I also use a Credit Card, and get LOADS of airmiles. I never carry a balance and take a free trip with my wife once a year. DD
a good reason not to keep your checking account loaded. have a savings account separate you draw from.
