John McCain: ’I can’t be a referee’
Drops 2004 crusade against ’527’ attack ads

GOP presidential contender John McCain says he can’t control every attack ad aimed at Democrat Barack Obama and fully expects he’ll face a similar barrage, sounding the bell for a raucous general election brawl.

“I can’t be a referee of every spot run on television,” McCain told the Herald in an exclusive interview. “I admire Sen. Obama and his accomplishments, but we all know there are groups who want to attack me.”

The Arizona senator’s hands-off posture on attack ads by now-infamous tax-free and unaccountable political groups called 527s marks a softening of his view on the negative campaign tactic - and opens the door to a no-holds-barred five-month scramble.

In 2004, McCain strongly condemned 527 ads attacking then-Democratic presidential contender John Kerry’s war record.

When “The Swift Boat Veterans for Truth” released high-impact ads attacking Kerry’s actions in Vietnam, McCain - also a decorated war veteran - called the ads “dishonest and dishonorable” and urged fellow Republican President Bush to condemn the ads as well.

The Swift Boat Veterans was a 527 group, which are tax-exempt entities who don’t have to answer to federal or state political finance committees, allowing candidates who gain by the ads to claim no involvement in them.

It was gentle reminder that someone is on record as believing that McCain is a different kind of Repub who will change for the better once he gets in office, but makes the opposite assumptions about Obama.

As part of their new counter-offensive against Internet smears, the Obama campaign has moved to put a stop to any idea that his birth certificate would contain some dirty secret -- for example, that he might have actually been born in another country. Here it is, newly released by the campaign, a birth certificate from Hawaii:

Conservative pundit Jim Geraghty had been speculating that Obama might have some other ulterior motive for not releasing the certificate -- that Obama's given name might have been "Barry" and changed to Barack in some sort of identity crisis.

Obama is running a smart campaign...

Fighting smears, gaming Google

Wired's Thomas Goetz emails to make a great point about Obama's big FightTheSmears.com rollout today:

By putting their own website out there front-and-center, and then getting everybody to link to it (starting with all the media covering the launch of the site), the result will be to drive fightthesmears.com towards the top of a Google search on, say, "obama muslim" or "michelle obama whitey". Ideally, if enough of the pro-Obama network links to fightthesmears.com, it'll drive the sites that peddle in the rumor-mongering, which are now the first results on said searches, off the top of the results list. Ideal long term result: any curious low-information voter who eventually bothers to google these pesky rumors will immediately be led to the debunking rather than the rumor.

My take: Did the Obama campaign create fightthesmears.com to game Google? If so, they're even more net-savvy than folks give them credit for.

Indeed, Obama already had a prototype of this page connected to his Fact Check site, and even bought Google ads linking it. But this wave of publicity will probably push the new site to the top of Google to stay.

GOP chief vows to go after Obama's relationships

WASHINGTON — Despite a vow to focus on issues, the Republican Party plans to use Barack Obama's relationships with controversial figures to undermine the public's view of his character, according to the chairman of the Republican National Committee.

The party will make an issue out of Obama's ties to such people as Chicago developer Antoin Rezko, recently conducted on fraud and money-laundering charges, and '60s radical William Ayers, unrepentant about his role in bombings of government buildings to protest the Vietnam War, GOP Chairman Robert M. "Mike" Duncan said.

Duncan hedged, however, about how the party would handle Obama's relationship with his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. He said the party wouldn't make an issue out of Wright, then refused to rule out using videos of Wright's inflammatory sermons in the campaign.

Duncan said that the presumptive Republican nominee, John McCain, had instructed him to run a campaign based on issues.

"He made it clear that he wanted to run a respectful campaign, a respectful campaign on issues, because this is the biggest leadership contest in the world, and we're doing that," Duncan said in an interview taped for C-SPAN's "Newsmakers" program that was conducted by reporters from McClatchy, the Politico Web site and C-SPAN.

Still, he said that Obama's judgment and character were legitimate targets.

"I think associations are fair game," Duncan said in the interview.

"I'd like to talk about Rezko in Chicago, the fact that he was one of the early supporters of Obama, helped him get started gaining this sweetheart deal for the house that he bought.

"I'd like to talk about William Ayers, who was an unrepentant underground Weatherman who was involved in bombings in this country."

Rezko is a Chicago businessman who contributed to Obama and raised money for him. He also sold a piece of property to Obama that was next to Obama's home. His conviction wasn't related to Obama.

Ayers is a Chicagoan who hosted a reception for Obama when Obama first ran for the Illinois senate. He was a member of the Weathermen, a '60s and '70s radical group that used bombs to protest the Vietnam War, and he's refused to apologize for it.

Duncan said that Republicans also would hammer Obama about two of the people he chose to help in his search for a vice presidential running mate, longtime Washington insider James Johnson and former Deputy U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.

Johnson stepped down Wednesday after reports that he may have received a sweetheart home loan from Countrywide Financial Corp., one of the banking giants caught up in the subprime mortgage backers that have created a national housing crisis.

Duncan noted that Holder was involved in the controversial pardon by former President Clinton of fugitive financier Marc Rich. He didn't note that one of Rich's lawyers was I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, who later was the chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney.

Duncan at first stepped back from making an issue of Wright, whose sermons are controversial and racially charged.

"We're talking about judgment; we're talking about association, but we're taking Senator Obama at his word about Reverend Wright, the fact that he said he didn't hear those sermons, the fact that he's disassociated himself from it," Duncan said.

"So that's not something you're going to hear me talking about. I am going to talk about Rezko and Ayers and all of the others."

But when he was asked whether he'd pledge not to use videos of Wright's sermons in ads, Duncan refused.

"Well, why at this point would I answer a question like that? It's not my intent. I have no intent, and will not make race a part of this campaign. I'll say it that way," he said.

If you guys think this is bad, just wait for Ann Coulter. She's probably jealous right now and is dreaming up the ideal line she can "innocently"throw out during some interview later on in the summer. I promise you it is coming. She can only go so long before needing an outrageous eruption to stay relevant.

It was a damned screen cap. One that looked as though they were paraphrasing somebody. If I had actually seen the story and known at the time that this was something Fox News came up with on their own, it would have jumped out at me.
