Yeah thats because the demand for college entry in China is huge. I heard they have alot of people there. Does not mean they are smarter.
197$ like others have said. he lost je jacket 18 dollar, and the change 79 dollar=97 however he has to pay the other store the 100 dollar for hte fake bill so: 97+100= 197$ p.s. is that triangle question seriously a question for a student? That is a question on a high school, right?
Where is the good $100 he originally rec'd from the neighbor? The 'neighbor' transaction is intended to confuse. The neighbor gave him $100 and he returned it. A net 0. So, he's 'out' $79 + $18 = $97 financially speaking. In a court of law, the theft would include the expected profit so it would be for the full $100. The difference is the expected profit, of course. Not sure? How did the thief do? He now has $79 plus a jacket worth $21 (or $18 as cogs). Or even another way to look at it is the balance sheet perspective. Started with a jacket that cost him $18/he could sell for $21. Now his till is short $79 in change and the jacket is gone. Again, out $97 financially speaking/ $100 legally.
yeah really...what school did this guy graduate from? also like someone said earlier this isn't really a math problem. it's more of an accounting word problem than anything. everyone can do the arithmetic needed for the calculation; it's just that not everybody can discover what the problem is really asking in order to find out what calculation they need to perform.
Good job, that's the answer. Many other people have posted the answer earlier so congrats to all of you who came up with 97 (100 if you count profit lost).
Yes I got it wrong last night. I guess the intention of my post was that I am constantly having to tutor international students (I am in the SF Bay Area - you can guess where I attend dookie) and work with fellow students from overseas - stereotypically the methods and concepts they have are far sharper and missing far too often from American students produced the US Math curriculum. Of course this could be due to the privileged and most accomplished coming to the US but this is only a half-truth. When you start to examine their curriculum and the way things are taught in China, it's no wonder they have such a good grasp on Math. Anyways, don't mean to spark a tangent debate or some political/socio issue; just couldn't help commenting after seeing that posted article.
Despite the fact that they have more people, you're talking about a country where more than half the people make less than $1 a day. The fact that there is more demand for college is a very key point I'm making. We take things for granted over here. Most people get to go to college and don't want to. And remember, their question is from a pre-entry exam. That means they learned that in high school.
I am not sure their method is so superior. The key to being good in basic math like Geometry and Algebra is to practice a lot. When I first caame to the States I find the stuff they teach here in high school is so simple compared to what they taught in earlier years in China but I got progressive worse as I got older (LOL ). Not everyone need to be real good in math but some of the people who are just so deficient in math is just beyond words. Math is important because it teaches you a way of thinking about how to solve problems that can be applied to many other fields.
The problem with math is there are answers to everything and 1 + 1 always gives you 2. You can't apply those principles to people.
Math was always my best subject in high school. But I only had ONE DAY of Algebra in college. When I started college I was lazy and wouldn't go to class. I only went to the first day of algebra. I didn't go back, do any homework, or take any tests. I never dropped the class either and I ended up making a C. Because of my major, that's the only math class I was required to take although there was a decent amount of math in my physics classes.
wait, what does this mean. 1 person + 1 person = 2 people. or are you saying the principles behind math don't apply to people, as in you can't take a derivative of a person to figure out what their soul is like? that's kind of a silly thing to criticize math for, since that's not what its for. and for the record, i hate math and suck at it.
I meant that there was actually math involved in the class, unlike History or Anthropology. My music theory classes substituted for the other math classes most people have to take.
MATH rules. F*ck "reasons why Britain lost the colonies" or "compose an essay about gays in the military" or "do a speech on how to do something" crap... MATH is correct or it isn't. At least you get partial credit for making a mistake that ruins your entire equation. What a load of bullsh*t. What are you trying to say with this???!?!?!?!? That's like saying 1 dumb thread + 1 dumb thread = 1 GARM 1 drop of water + 1 drop of water = 2 drops of water in one HUGE drop. Please.
