A category 1 hurricane is about the same as a strong front of showers with strong winds..... You might lose power, and some minor flooding, but I doubt this storm is going to pack much of a wallop.... Now if it stops and camps overhead....THEN, that would be different. DD
this is going to sux. my backyard is on beamer near beltway 8 and it seems that every time we have any strong storms it floods. i hope this storm speeds up a bit more. to make things even better my boss said we are having a normal day tomorrow
Wow, I've been under the impression for a while now that my house is in the 100 year flood plane. According to the link Mango gave, it is just north of it. I'll be damned.
No. In fact, for this storm, only those in flood prone areas should be concerned. With this storm, even if the eye passes right over you and you get the worst of it, inland, it won't be all that bad. The worst damage from a storm like this will be from flooding. It may spawn a tornado or 4, but those are extremely random and impossible to predict. In other words, the chances of getting hit by one are tiny.
Jeff, Did it actually weaken some? I saw the max winds were 50mph earlier and now it looks like they are reporting 45mph? I figured it would strengthen some, not weaken..... DD
It's just really ragged. It's still feeling the effects of that vertical shear and that will continue for a few more hours if the forecast holds. It doesn't have anything close yet to a closed circulation, but it does have that counterclockwise rotation working. My guess is that it will begin some gradual strengthening this afternoon during the heat of the day. I still don't see it being organized enough or having enough time over water to become anything more than a marginal hurricane. Even the NHC only gives it a 20 percent chance of reaching hurricane status.
I'm supposed to fly into Houston tomorrow afternoon from Pittsburgh. Should I be worried? Can some of the weather experts here tell me the likelihood of my flight being cancelled?
I would look for a flight tonight or maybe Wednesday, I flew in last night and they were concerned even then over some stupid thunderstorms. Just trying to get from Minneapolis to Houston and then delay me twice and reroute me through Atlanta. I HATE AIRPORTS.
Definitely not flying out tonight. It's my last night in Pgh with my girlfriend and I'm not cutting that short. She's here performing a play and won't come home for another three weeks. But I'm nervous about delaying til Wednesday too. We have two cats that are home alone. A friend is stopping in regularly to care for them, but I hate the idea of them being alone during the storm. This is really bad timing. And I'm a nervous flyer even under normal conditions.
My car is at the airport too. Even if I fly in as scheduled I'm really not looking forward to driving home in this storm. This is a drag.
Man. I have a pretty good idea where you live. Do your street names sound Musical? One of the Woodland Trails neighborhood
