Good point. If Ensberg is making that much more than you, how valuable could you be?

i don't think we can argue that real value is locked in a player's salary. owners pay for offensive pop which has more to do with putting fans in the seats than actual value to a baseball team. this wasn't him testing free agency, either.

If he was a free agent, he would command more than 2.8 million. The only team he could negotiate with was the Astros.

Just think of him as the equivalent to Bruce Bowen, a poor offensive player, who is well regarded (and rewarded) for his defensive prowess.

That would make him below average at his position.

What other team had the opportunity to sign him?

You can't get into a bidding war without other teams that can bid.

Color me strange, because I do. Excellent defense is one of the things I really enjoy about watching a baseball game. I love to watch the fielders reposition themselves for each hitter. I love to watch how the catcher sets up and the sequence and location of pitches he and the pitcher select to try to get a guy out.

Why wouldn't any other team have an opportunity to bid for him?

He's still under club control. Players aren't eligible for free agency (other clubs bidding) for six years.

Instead of the big three we could call them the 0-3.
