    I knew I was missing something simple. Thanks.

    I knew all this stuff like the back of my hand in high school, but I'm rusty these days :eek:

    =SUM(L2:Q2) in R2
    =SUM(L3:Q3) in R3 and so on just drag and paste.

    so R2's value would be SUM(L2, M2, ... , Q2)
    Then.. you can select the whole range (R2, R1000) for example, then use Fill in Edit, or Ctrl-D
    or if you select the cell R2, there is a small dark square at the lower right corner, you can hover over it and it becomes a cross, then you can drag it down.

    as a result, R3's value would be SUM(L3, M3,..., Q3)
    and R4's value would be SUM(L4, M4,...,Q4)
