No problemo. Hey, it was a FAMILY NIGHT for ya'll and I didn't want to ... what the heck, I'll do it next time, eh... I'll do it... I took the food, didn't I? I didn't eat it while driving... I shared food with Mrs. SwoLy. For MoBalls, it was ONE CABLE TO RULE THEM ALL: Optical. We figured out it was best to leave all inputs (cable receiver, Blu-ray player, VCR, BetaMax, and 8-track player) going to the TV, and an OPTICAL going out to his BuyOurStuff,Eh? System. easy. My in-laws have the same TV they bought in 2003; I could never get the HD receiver I bought for myself to output HD to the TV (have you?), I know it doesn't have an HD tuner; Now, it doesn't work and it's just sitting there because it shuts itself off... I think there may be a leak in one of the components onto the main board. I hope you have had BETTER luck with yours and that ours just had bad components. I was afraid of this. If you DO get a home theater system that allows VIDEO along with AUDIO input, it looks like you will have to go through the sound system for your sound and video, and switch your A/V on your surround sound and leave it on one input on your TV, unless you switch to S-video or Composite (yellow). I guess we'll wait until you get that surround sound system to figure out what cables or components to add?
where is the bargin bin? Is it always there or is it just sometimes on those tables they sit out there?
I have a question which will definitely paint me as the novice home theatre person that I am. If I get a receiver with enough inputs, can I have multiple gaming systems hooked up at the same time. As it is now, I have 3 inputs on my HDTV. I have a DVD, Direct TV, and either the Xbox 360 or Wii hooked up. I would love to be able to have both the Xbox and Wii hooked up at the same time so as not to have to switch the cables each time I want to use a different system. I know that receivers have inputs on them, but I'm not sure about if it would actually help me in hooking up both game systems at the same time.
FB, I haven't done it, but I don't see why you couldn't. A different input for each with the receiver output going to the tv.
Franchise, what you using for inputs? hdmis? components? a little bit of both? you can get a receiver that does video switching, that's not a problem. or if you really don't care about sound you can just get video selector http://store.videogamecentral.com/switches-and-selectors.html
Thanks for all the help. I'm using HDMI for everything, except for the Wii, which isn't exactly HDMI, I don't think. It can get up to 720P, I think but not 1080P. That's OK, I do have a fairly large 53" LCD, and can notice a slight difference in the quality, but it's not like it ruins it for me or anything. I would like to definitely improve the sound I have now. I don't know about making 7.1 discreet enough, so even if I get a system that can handle 7.1, I'll still be using it as a 5.1. I know where the speakers will go with that set up.
Onkyo's are great bang-for-the-buck receivers (like the one tinhead linked to), but I know some of those models run pretty hot. If you're putting it into an enclosed space (even relatively), make sure it's ventilated. The 605 model used to run hot as hell, but I think the 606 may run cooler.
I have a 605 and it's great...and I just bought a 706...I love them...I also just bought an LG lcd for the bedroom...BestBuy had a package deal (incl. 360 60gb that I'm trying to get rid of)...I always go to avsforums to get the right calibration settings...
