Is Pirate Bay public? I ask because they have a link to register, but I can download from their site anyway.
key. They get/flag you on the uploads. turn off sharing, move them to different folders. I put mine on an external hard drive, worst comes to worst, throw it in the ocean.
Just some info on freaking out and delteing files: Highlighting the file and hitting 'delete' won't really do crap. It's so easy to recover data with the right tools if it's simply deleted. You either need to low-level format the drive with some software that also overwrites everything with 1s and 0s, or take a strong magnet or sledge hammer to it to make sure everything is unrecoverable.
or if you dont want to go totally overboard just use one of the many programs out there that will overwrite the file itself a set number of times (the good ones let you set how many times it is overwritten)
You gotta love the Hangout of late - we have guys posting threads about them getting sued for misrepresentation on eBay and now about going to jail for downloading stuff illegally. Now, all we need is someone to post a thread about how they got fired from their job for posting on clutchfans and then we would have a true trifecta!! I can see it now - the thread would be titled [HELP!!!]Got Fired from Job for Posting on BBS - Now What?
You have a wireless network setup? If so say that someone else must have jumped on the network without your permission and downloaded the file.
They are just giving you a warning. No biggie. In the future: 1. Like other posters have said, turn off uploading and move your files into a different folder after they are downloaded. or 2. Find one of those link websites that let's you watch tv shows for free on your pc.
Oplink DSL does not use PPPoE like AT&T, so it is actually faster. PPPoE is a hack designed to allow big providers to issue more accounts than they actually have bandwidth for and tacks on overhead to every data packet that is transmitted. Also to the OP ... I'm guessing you got caught because you used LimeWire or some other typical filesharing application. Use a torrent and keep yourself out of trouble. Frankly I don't even see the need to download shows now that they're available to watch online on most network web sites anyway. At least the commercials are much fewer and less annoying. By downloading you're unfairly depriving them of their revenue, and they do have a right to come after you.
fighting just makes it worse.. "you see, the trick is to kick someone's ass or becomes someone's b****, the first day"
If you use google you'll find that a lot of people have recieved similar letters for downloading HBO content. You can pretty much ignore it since its your first letter(right?). Worst case scenario is that your ISP cuts off your service and you have to find another one, most ISP's take their privacy agreements seriously and would rather cutoff a customer rather then hand over the information regarding ip adresses.
This is the first time I've been contacted. Also, in response to others, I did not use Limewire, Kazaa, etc.
Happened to a friend of mine in the past. I think his deal was something with acrobat etc. Maybe photoshop.
This is what I do. The only files I share are R2K's Rox vids.. it keeps my ratio balanced. I think they're just bluffing. Tell them to go suck it and see them in court--wait, wrong thread.
