Well it looks like my starter is out...at least that's what the AAA guy says. The car just keeps clicking and he said the battery is fine (even hooked up his battery). Any suggestions on where to get this repaired? I called Sears and their quote was $320 (parts and labor, towing not included). Is that reasonable? I have a 2000 Honda Accord. At least the car failed while in the driveway and not outside somewhere, considering the weather. TIA
I think Sears is probably going to be more on the expensive side....I'd say a smaller shop may not be a bad option to replace a starter, but make asure you get a good reference
Honestly I'd google car repair shops then just read the reviews. Most of the time 4+ stars on Yelp = pretty solid shop to go to.
Take your battery out and take it to Autozone for testing. Cold weather like this will kill a weak battery. The clicking sound doesn't mean your start is out necessarily. Did the tow driver remove his battery and put it in your car or did he just try to jump it?
Yeah Autozone will confirm a good/bad battery. What kind of car do you have? Starters can be pretty easy to replace. I did my own a few years back...had to jack the car up to get to it wasI'd give a 3/10 for overall difficulty and probably saved myself quite a bit in labor...bought the starter I needed at Autozone, too.
THIS. The cold weather killed my battery last winter, I was worried it was something more. Took it to walmart, they tested and replaced it.
I dont think he can tell if the battery is good or not by using a jump start. Get it checked out first to be sure. I think it's something you may be able to do, depending on how hard it is to get to it. Or just ask around and find a local mechanic. He may even be able to come over and do and you won't have to tow it anywhere.
a clicking sound usually means a bad battery. this has happened to me a couple of times this year and also to a couple of friends. they called, told me what they were hearing and each time it was the battery.
