hmm... try it in safe mode. press "f8" when the computer is booting, then go into safe mode then try it. if that doesn't work, read this: http://www.precisesecurity.com/computer-virus/wsfdc-may060.htm if that doesn't work, it's time to reformat.
Nope. All different startup combinations didn't work. The computer would work for a bit, but then the Spyguard stuff would kick in. I manually cleaned the registry although I suspect I missed a few things. I deleted files and dlls that were created when the virus was downloaded, but it had its' hooks in places I couldn't either find or get to. Now that they have their documents, I am just going to have them reformat and reinstall. Since they have an iMac, the old Windows computer is going to just be for the grandkids.
The virus I dealt with would not let me do a system restore either. I tried in regular and safe mode to no avail. It would let me bring up system restore and select a date I wanted to restore from, but then it did absolutely nothing.
note: NEVER EVER install a anit-spyware software that's not reputable. Spyguard is a rogue ant-spyware program that put the spyware in there in the first place and makes you pay to remove it. there's alot of them out there. i personally don't use an anti-spyware and have a the most basic anti-virus. as long as you keep updated, don't install unknown apps (especially pirated software), or click on "yes" on unknown web installs, there's very little risk of getting a virus.
lol...that's what we've been cleaning up here in the office on the previously mentioned client's pc. Avast seemed to take care of it. That Spyguard 2008 is a b****. Wouldn't let us run any of the popular cleaners...plus, every time I would plug in a USB key with a new cleaning program, it would infect the USB key. Good times....ahhhh....good times.
I agree.....I just have a difficult time convincing folks of that. They always claim they didn't do it and shift the blame to kids or grandkids.
Well did you remove all the start up protocols in the registry including local machine and local user? If the documents are safe it's moot, but just like House I'm still curious now. I could see myself actually pulling a House and infecting myself jsut to find out if I could beat it...
I went to every single start, run, runonce key throughout the entire registry. I also deleted stuff via msconfig. I turned off system restore. I deleted the safeguard 2008 files from "Program Files". I even deleted anything ending in msi. I am sure I missed stuff, but dadgumit, I could not figure out what. Across reboots the safeguard 2008 files would appear back in the Program Files. I found various procedures concerning this virus via google, but none completely helped.
CCleaner works quite good (http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/). Also, go here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx Microsoft has a nice program. I use it and it works quite well. Run a full system scan.
ALOTTTT of my fellow students at my university have been complaining about this 1 too. and another 1 thats called antivirus 2009 i think... imma try some more of these and get back to u guys thanks for the help!
dude, get Avast!'s newest version. it will search the "running memory" and probably catch the virus, then it will tell you the need to schedule a "boot time scan".. do that, restart the computer (it actually restarts on its own) and let it run.. it went for a good 5 hours for me (I had a different virus though). Then, when your computer is back up, download malwareBytes and run a "full scan".. it will take 90 minutes or so..you should be set after that.. I'm wondering though, is it letting you download and run anti-virus applications? I didn't read through the thread carefully so you might've said something about that earlier. I had this one virus that essentially stripped me of the ability to run any application, I had to go into "drivers -> other drivers" and disable the fake driver the virus has set up, reboot the computer and voila, I could access all of my applications.. I ran Avast boot time scan then MalwareBytes (BOTH ARE FREE!), and it worked like a charm.. hope this helps source: personal experience of the RocketsMac with a bazillion viruses that keep hitting me as a result of trying to watch Entourage and Scrubs episodes online.. you open the link and all of the sudden you have it, and it sucks
I tried to download avast and it wouldnt let me. I had a virus recently but was able to google it and figure out how to get rid of it........or so i thought. Problem is, avg didnt help me apparently. My question is...what do i have to do or delete so that I can download avast? Everytime I try to download avast........i get this pop-up that says that "This download has been stopped by your Security Zone Policy"
Antivirus 2008 and Antivirus 2009 were also two problems my in-laws had. The icon was similar (may have been the same) as the MS Windows "shield" icon.
Simplest answer I think is to download Firefox and never play with IE again. Or maybe Google Chrome if you're feeling adventurous. I recommend that everyone download avast, update it, and run the boot time scan at least once. AVG Free does NOT have boot time scanning.
