only access to NYC from NJ is through NJ Transit or the PATH train... the MTA runs NYC transit, which is currently on strike, the LIRR, and MEtro North
thanks for the responses guy, keep em coming am certainly happy to leave it till the last minute if you guys think it is ok, from what i have read February is low season for tourism in the US haven't tried priceline before can some explain? for those counting the months it is actually about 44 days till we arrive in New York so certainly not 6 months and even under 2 months not sure about staying outside manhatten can understand the attraction from a financial point of view but isn't the point of going to NY the concept of staying in Manhatten have looked at some appartments which on the surface seem cheap... looked in woogo.com and they look great on the web from the pictures and price but when you read reviews they get ripped to shreads to the point where i have read some people saying they will take them to court for false advertising also looked at site called http://www.lodgis.com/ but not sure about staying in someone's apartment... guess there is something nice about your own room and the fact it will be cleaned for you each day..... across110t... will check out those couple you suggested also probably gonna buy tickets for the knicks v Rox on the 5th this weekend
the beacon hotel on broadway and 75th is around $200 nightly, depending on your room, and is quite nice. great restaurants, shopping nearby, including the holy trinity of nyc food shopping, Fairway, Citarella, and Zabars, not to mention H&H Bagel. You might also check out On the Avenue which is right around the corner on 77th street. Hotel Conexions had a rate of $165. My inlaws have stayed at both places and they were happy. I hear on the ave rooms are a little smaller. Both these hotels are also quite near subways, the 1&9 train at 79th street, and the 1,2,3& 9 at 72nd. not coincidentally, both are also near basso-central. lastly, check out the Hotel Lucerne on 79th and Amsterdam. They show rates starting at $195. I've stayed there and the rooms were nice. Just a block from the Natural History Museum, w/ an amazing restaurant in the hotel called Nice Matin, and Amsterdam Ave is brunch and bar central.
thanks Basso, with the long weekend this weekend will do some very extensive research, so your suggestions are greatly appreciated
sorry Smeg, its the Park Central and its on 7th Ave and 56th... my friends from houston came up recently and stayed there...
Well if you're planning on staying in Manhattan, like I said before, avoid the touristy spots like midtown or times square. Look for hotels in downtown or the west side. avoid the east side at all costs.
Nothing's especially risky in Manhattan anymore, Smeg. And downtown's more fun than uptown or midtown anyway. If you can find a decent price downtown, go for it and count your blessings. You'll be in New York after all. You'll only go to your room to sleep. Spend your money elsewhere. But definitely don't take the suggestion to rent a room in Jersey. The commute will ruin your trip. If you were moving there, I'd say to find the cheapest place you could find in Brooklyn (or even Queens), but since you're visiting, just get the cheapest room you can find in Manhattan. Safety's not an issue there anymore.
anyone heard of Shelburne Murray Hill is at 303 lexington, is heavily discounted on expedia and has good reviews
It's 38th and Lexington. A dead neighborhood, but not a horrible cab from wherever you might want to go. You'd be on the east side, but not horribly east (that matters in midtown or uptown - east is good in downtown). If memory serves (I haven't lived there in almost fifteen years), you'd have Park, Madison, Fourth and Fifth (at least, and maybe not quite in that order) to your west before Broadway, each long blocks, so it's not great for walking anywhere. But it is pretty much midtown. If you have places to go uptown and on the west side of the island, you're not too far off from being centrally located. You just don't have anything good in your actual neighborhood. If it's like it was when I lived there, it's an incredibly dead neighborhood. If you can get something for around 20-50 bucks more downtown, I'd go for it. But that's just me.
www.farechase.yahoo.com Sort hotels in New York, then after the search, sort by price. Hotels in New York on there start from $59 and up. The Hotel I originally found was the Millenium UN Plaza in Mid Manhatten for $169/night. But the nice thing about the site is it shows pictures and has the hotel's rating.
guess our key question is should we book soon or leave it as late as possible, in hope of a last minute deal?
