If you trade for Doleac, it doesn't hurt that much to just cut him because of his expiring deal.

Well, it hurts to the tune of about $3M+.

Wish we all could live in a world where people can be paid upfront what they are expected to earn over the next 3 years. That is the stupidest thing financially. Unless you're trying to free up a roster spot, why pay a guy to do nothing for you? At least have him contribute somehow..or keep him on for trade fodder.

Buyouts or 'cuts' are incomprehensible to me.

I just assumed Portland would buy him out for us

Doleac's 3mm, IMHO, if it were taken back as part of Rafe, would obviate the need for Deke, thereby saving Deke's 2mm (I'm guessing) contract.

Sometimes though, they lead to us getting Steve Francis. Somehow, I'm okay with that.

My apologies. Reviewing my response, I think I came across as being a little cross....and crass. That was not my intent.

Wouldn't that save us $3 mil in luxury tax and allow us to profit $2 million in revenue sharing for a net profit of $2mil?

The buyout still counts for luxury tax purposes?

Ya I know. But from portland's perspective, that is ridiculous. There was even a column by a sports writer stating how stupid it was to give a guy 30million to not play for you. Works out great for us, but Portland is stupid and I don't care if their owner is richer than God. He's reckless with his money and has no business sense in terms of basketball.

Doleac's contract because it is expiring could be more easily combined with Sura's and Snyder's for possible trades for a quality big.

It beats paying Rafer about 15 mill to be your 4th string point for 3 years.

That may be the worst trade proposal I've ever seen.

I don't think there's enough drugs in the world to get Memphis to trade away 2 young, up and coming players, and get rid of Stro, who's overpaid but a starting to become a good trading chip because of contract length, for Adonyle Foyle and his horrendous contract and Wayne Simien.

If I was the Rockets, that'd be a great deal.

It looks like one of those "the salaries match so they are considering it" kind of moves. I also looked at Memphis and wondered what they were getting out of it. Also, if Miami is only getting Alston then why would they trade all of that?

    It's a 4-team trade (1st sign that it's not going to happen)

Rockets get: Alonzo Mourning and Hakim Warrick

    Heat get: Rafer Alston

Warriors get: Chris Quinn, Stromile Swift, and Kyle Lowry

Grizzlies get: Adonal Foyle and Wayne Simien

Enormously silly trade! Ya, Alonzo comes back for one more year only to be betrayed and traded from his hometown just so the team can get a backup PG. The other lopside of this is on the Grizzlies. Who in their right mind would take on Adonal's monstrosity of a contract?? And why trade for Simien when you have Warrick whose demonstrated more potential?

This is ridiculous to even explain.
