Heat acquire F Ceballos from Detroit for second-round pick

    Updated 12:05 AM ET November 27, 2000MIAMI (Ticker) --

Beating a league-imposed deadline by minutes, the struggling Miami Heat acquired forward Cedric Ceballos from the Detroit Pistons for a conditional second-round draft pick tonight.
The Heat had until midnight to use a $3.9 million salary cap exception granted them when it was determined center Alonzo Mourning would miss the season with a kidney ailment.
They settled on Ceballos, a veteran scorer who was not playing much for the Pistons and figured to see even less time due to Detroit's signing of Joe Smith.
"With the addition of Joe Smith, it became very apparent we needed to make a roster management move," Pistons president Joe Dumars said.
Ironically, the Heat also were interested in Smith and could have offered him the $3.9 million exception, more than all but two teams could have given the free agent. Instead, they had to settle for Ceballos, who reportedly will make $3.9 million this season.
Ceballos scored four points in nine minutes of Detroit's 94-79 loss to Utah tonight. He had been averaging 5.9 points and 2.2 rebounds this season but is a proven scorer, having averaging 14.8 points in his first 10 NBA seasons.
With Mourning out and Eddie Jones and Dan Majerle missing time with injuries, the Heat have struggled to a 5-8 mark. Only Chicago has a worse offense than Miami, which is averaging 83.7 points per game.
The 6-7 Ceballos could help in that regard. He is a terrific garbage player who is able to score points in bunches without having plays run for him. However, he is a poor defender, which may not sit well with Heat coach Pat Riley's principles.
To make roster room for Ceballos, the Heat waived rookie swingman Jamal Robinson, who scored six points in six games.
Meanwhile, the Pistons continued moving toward their goal of creating as much salary cap room as possible for the offseason.
"By making this deal, not only does this give us more flexibility with the salary cap, it also allows us to receive a trade exception," Dumars said.

    JuanValdez,

I looked at the various Heat BBS sites listed at:
    http://bleachermob.homestead.com/madness.html

    and they seemed pretty stagnant.

Hunting for a decent Heat web ring.
A strange feeling that it will be disappointing also.

The Sun Sentinel has a message board on it. Not sure how up-to-date it is :
    http://www.sunsentinel.com/sports/heat/index.htm

Also, have you tried the Usenet newsgroup alt.sports.basketball.nba.miami-heat? You may be able to pull information from the people that frequent it, if that's what you're looking for.

I can give you a list of some other fan pages, but they're all rinky-dink pages.
